PostPosted: Sat Feb 05, 2005 4:36 pm    Post subject: Unknown name / Unknown Number Reply with quote Back to top

Hi all,

I have recently missed two calls from "Unknown name / Unknown number".

Does anyone know what kind of situation would result in the unknowns?

I ask because I've recently sent in resumes for jobs and I'm wondering if there's any chance I missed one of those calls. I know for a fact all personal calls I get from friends/family show up on caller ID.

If a call was coming from a big office facility (which it could be if it's job related) is there a chance it wouldn't show up because of that? Or does this happen for some other reason?

Thanks for any info!

There could be several reasons why you get that result on your caller id. First, have you tried to recover the number using Call Return (*69)? *69 will tell you what the last phone number that called was and will ask if you want to be connected to it. You might keep it in mind.

It could be a long distance call, an unlisted number, or a business. Do you get any other calls with a working caller id? Has the phone you are using worked with caller id before? You might have a bad cable or a bad phone adapter. Do you have another phone to test with?

If none of the above items help, it's time to call Technical Support.

Hi,

I tried *69 and it said the number was not available with that service.

Caller id shows up for everything else with anyone that calls me. This is the first it's ever said unknown. I even get caller id on friends that call me from out of state.

Unknown calls usually come from two sources these days. The first is telemarketers despite the law concerning do-not-calls etc. The second is bill collectors. There's only one reason for Unknown calls - they're hiding.

Lots of cell phones in the AMPS/NAMPS days showed up as Unknown but that is fairly rare these days. Usually you've get the number and the name of the cell provider in some cases, while in others you'll get the subscribe name.

Some calling cards show up as unknown when people call me using them.

Doctor's offices often don't provide CallerID information.

My work PBX doesn't provide outgoing CallerID. The PBX would require a very expensive software upgrade in order to support Outgoing CallerID information so we decided not to.

My theory is that if it was an important call they would have left a voicemail.

Callng cards all flow through one of the large IXC's in the U.S such as MCI, Sprint, or SBC/AT&T. All of those networks conform to SS7 rules and regulations and could pass the source number if they wished instead of pushing the "Unknown". For example, you dial an 800 number to reach the calling card service. They know right then and there where you're calling from via ANI. Hell, when I had my 866 number active the ANI got translated to Caller-ID info and it was NEVER, EVER blocked even if it was someone calling using a calling card.

International uses their own flavor of SS7, it's a CCITT standard which escpes me at the moment. Unless the call is coming from a third world country there isn't any reason calls should not deliver Caller ID.

I've got well over a decade with installing and maintaing PBX's. Right now I'm responsible for one that uses a PRI circuit and I make damnably sure the PBX is programmed to send Caller-ID.

In all instances the main reason you see Unknowns is either due to technical limitations in the case of 3rd world coutnries, to outright fraud on the part of the big IXC's. This doesn't surprise me in the least, what with MCI profitting $5 million a year hosting spammers.

I concur with one of the other posters. Any time I've been job hunting they've left a message.

My biggest gripe with Vonage right now is that they don't offer anonymous call rejection. I'm going to have to implement it with my Asterisk setup - that it will cost me around $500 to do what they could do with a simple configuration change on the various #5ESS and DMS-100 switches they host off of with Paetec and Focal.
