PostPosted: Sat Feb 05, 2005 1:38 pm    Post subject: Adding Vonage disrupts my networking between computers? Reply with quote Back to top

Hello -

I just received my Vonage package and had a few problems. This is how it is currently set up.

office:
main server computer
Client Computer #1
Client Computer #2
Client Computer #3

Existing Setup:
From the wall, the phone line goes into a 2Wire Router/Modem that has a ethernet and USB port. Client #1 is plugged directly into the USB Port. The Ethernet goes into a Linksys Switch that has Client #2 and Server Computer connected to it. Client #3 is wireless (which is using the 2Wire).

New Setup:
2Wire > Switch > Vonage Router. I have internet access and phone access but now the client computers are not able to connect to the SQL Server on the main computer.

then i tried:
2Wire > Vonage Router > Switch. Same problem.

it looks pretty similar to this graph:

http://vonage.com/help_knowledgeBase_article.php?article=88

but my router and modem are one unit.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advanced,

Johnny

I would suggest this setup. 2Wire > Vonage Router > Switch with ALL devices, including your main computer, connected to the switch. Do not use the USB port on the 2Wire for your main computer.

If I understand your setup, this is what is happening now. You have DHCP enabled (by default) on both your 2Wire router and your new RT31P2 router. Your main computer is probably being assigned a local IP address in the 192.168.1.x range by the 2Wire DHCP. Your other devices are probably being assigned local IP addresses in the range of 192.168.15.x by the DHCP on the RT31P2. In order to be on the same network as your other devices, your main computer needs to get an address in the same range as they. To do that, your main computer and all otehr devices need to be using the same DHCP -- so all your devices need to be plugged into the switch which is using the DHCP on the RT31P2.

I'm not an expert at networking, but I think that may be the solution. Hopefully, others will either confirm my suggestion or tell you why it won't work.

Good luck.

Fletcher

EDITED TO ADD:

By the way, you will either need to use all wired connections or use a wireless access point behind the RT31P2 or switch. Otherwise the wireless in the 2Wire will still be using the DHCP of the 2Wire and assigning local IP addresses in a different range from those assigned by the DHCP of the RT31P2.

Hi Fletcher -

Thank you for the information.

I know the main computer is connected to the switch and client #2 computer is connected to the switch also. but the client loses the networking ability.

i understand now why client #1 and client #3 (wireless) would have trouble since they would be connected to the 2Wire.

I will check all the connections again and reboot all the system to see.

Thanks,

Johnny

Also, I meant to add that you should turn on DHCP on BOTH routers, despite the advice others often give. There is not reason not to do that.

Perhaps you have DHCP disabled on the Vonage router into which the switch is plugged?

The point is that all the PCs have to be in the same local IP range. You can check that easily on each of your PCs. In Windows go to the Start button and choose Run. Then type CMD to get a DOS prompt command window. Then type IPCONFIG /ALL and look for the IP address of that computer. All of them should be in the same range, for example, they should all be either 192.168.1.x or 192.168.15.x. If not, that explains why they can't see each other on your local area network.

Just something else to try while you're waiting to see the Eagles beat the Pats. Oops, we're not supposed to express political views here. Very Happy

Good luck. Please let us know how this comes out. I expect you'll get your system working after a little more trial and error.

Consider this set up:

2wire-->switch-->WAN port on Linksys only (do not use its LAN ports)

All of your computers should connect to the switch.

The factory defaults of the Linksys should allow its WAN port to obtain an IP from your 2Wire.

This setup utilizes the features of your 2Wire.
