Have you ever heard of the saying "You get what you pay for?" Personally I am fine paying half the cost of POTS and getting a 90% reliable service. If you want customer service call Verizon and pay for it. Vonage is keeping their expenses down and passing it to us. I wouldn't want it any other way....unless they could do it for the same price, then I am all for it. Bottom line, we ALL came here to save money.

I have added "Softphone" thingy to my account but did not like the quality and wanted to remove it from my account. For one week I have been trying to do that ... They say "call cancellation department to remove a line" but they do not have such department. I cannot get anything but busy lines for every option I picked. I sent them 3 emails and did not get a reply. I sent them 3 faxes with no avail.

I am getting really annoyed with this...

DentalRep, the problem with your argument is this: it has nothing to do with anything we're talking about. Why do I say that? Because:

A) Vonage doesn't advertise 90% reliability.
B) Vonage doesn't say it is less reliable than POTS.
C) Vonage doesn't say, "You're paying less, so you get less."

Therefore, you're conclusion that poor service and 90% reliability is a function of the price Vonage has chosen to offer is completely irrational.

Vonage advertises a service, with a specific degree of quality, at a specific price point, which they say is equal or better than the quality of POTS. That claim is false in my experience (and yours as well if your reliability is only 90%). It's that simple. Why don't you want what they advertised? If I offer you a service at a certain price, and don't provide it, do you just roll over and say, oh well, I got screwed, grease me up and screw me harder?

Maybe you do.

One other thing for the DentalRep --

Vonage doesn't have the same costs that Verizon has. So you can't equate Verizon's price with Vonage's price and say that 1/2 the price of Verizon equals half the service of Verizon. You're comparing apples to oranges.

Also, Vonage has no problem spending tons of money on advertising to recklessly grow the size of the company without adding to its infrastructure...but you don't have a problem with that either, right?

The only way to keep a company in check is to be a demanding customer. If you're happy, then go be happy, quietly, somewhere else, far away from the legitimate discussions others are having about problems with Vonage.

I guess it comes down to expectations. I really didn't expect much out of Voip to start off with after reading numerous reports that the industry was not mature yet. Rather than falling for an advertisement, I read unbiased reviews that in a way bashed the technology saying that it was not up to par yet. Personally I have been thrilled because it is better than expected.

As a consumer, I feel that some of the burden falls on us to research our decisions. That way when we do make the leap it will be somewhat well informed. I hear everyday on the radio how great KIA's are, and how every cell phone company has the best coverage in my area. If I believed or expected all this to be true or even close to it, then I would get disappointed way too often. Instead, I read consumer reports and talk to people that have the product or service. Sure I may be anal in way about it, but I know (for the most part) what I am getting into.

What I am trying to get at is this is a new technology that is busting at the seams. There are going to be roadbumps on the way including loss of service and terrible customer service. Is it going to get better? Yes it is, but be sure that some of that will come at a price. Most people that have suffered through the growing pains will be more than happy to pay more for a better product. I too will be willing to a point.

Vonage knows that we didn't all jump aboard to pay the same as a POTS line. They know this and as a result they have to control costs which slows the improvement process. The fact is we ALL came to Vonage to save money and hopefully have the same level of service. Realistically though, you get what you pay for. It isn't as reliable yet and it isn't as good as a landline. the technology just isn't there yet. We need to be patient and it will pay off.

Vonage isn't for everyone yet. If you have no cell phone and cannot live without 911 then I would wait. The thing is that I see all these people post saying how unhappy they are, and how they can't live without certain features. They chose to come to Vonage and they need to decide if the money they save outweighs the feature they are missing. If not then they need to find something that meets their needs.

Try to get ahold of Vonage to cancel the service (ive been
2 weeks so far), try to get Vonage to let go of your phone
number. Im told my number will be held till August, and as
they are unregulated there is nothing i can do.

That is part of the risk, and you should have been prepared for that. I am surprised they are releasing it all being they don't have to. As with any new service, it is best to test it out to see if it fits you. Even if it does at the time, you have to realize that you may never get your number back if you switched back to something else.

I personally don't like it or condone that practice but it is just the facts. Be glad you are getting it back in August.

I've been a Vonage Customer for 2 years. Their service was not this bad before. They need to figure out how to grow better, plain and simple.
