PostPosted: Fri Feb 04, 2005 10:39 am    Post subject: Accessing RT31P2 Admin Screen Behind Another Router? Reply with quote Back to top

I have my RT31P2 set up behind my other router and everything works great.

When I want to access the administration page for my RT31P2, however, I can only do that by connecting a computer into one of the ethernet ports on that adapter. I cannot seem to get to it from my computers connected into the other router.

I have tried using both the IP address assigned by my first router to the RT31P2 ( 192.168.0.18 ) and the deault IP address of the RT31P2 ( 192.168.15.1 ) with no success. In both cases, I just get a time out.

I have temporarily disabled my software firewall, so that is not blocking access through the computer on my old router.

I have also tried putting the RT31P2 in the DMZ of my old router.

If I plug a laptop directly into the RT31P2, I can access the setup page just fine -- but this is a hassle and I'd like to be able to get to the RT31P2 from my main desktop via my original router.

Any ideas or suggestions?

can you ping the RT31P2's ip?
is the RT31P2 set up for static IP or obtain automatically? is nat turned on on your first router?
also, is there any reason you don't want the RT31P2 first and then your router and other computers behind it?

1. No, I cannot ping either 192.168.1.18 (DHCP assigned from first router) or 192.168.15.1 (default for RT31P2). I just get timeouts in both cases.

2. My original router does not allow static addresses that I can find. I have searched but it only seems to use DHCP to create addresses. I have checked the MAC address listing and know that I have the address assigned to the RT31P2 by router. I have all the MAC addresses of all my devices and can see easily which addresses they have been assigned.

3. I'm not sure how to tell if NAT is turned on. I'm not that sophisticated in these things. Advice?

4. Yes, I cannot put the RT31P2 first. I use a relatively new Linksys WCG200 which is a combined cable modem/router/wireless access point. Since that device includes my modem, I must put the phone adapter behind it. Otherwise, I definitely would put the phone adapter in front.

Thanks for helping with this. Any advice you can offer will be appreciated.

nat is under the advanced config screen of the modem setup. but now that I think about it, it must be on if you have multiple computers working on the device.
you should be able to set a static ip to the RT31P2. make sure you set it up in both the RT31P2 screen and the WCG. or you can wait for someone who understands this better to come along and tell us both what the problem is. reading nethog's post may help.

Reebok,

Thanks, I had the manual and have searched it electronically with Adobe for "static." I found a lot of references that say to assign a PC (or other device) a static ip address for various reasons. The problem is that none of those references says how to do that -- unless I've missed it. I've also poked around in the menu system on my WCG200 but cannot find any place to set individual static ip addresses.

By the way, I did find how to disable NAT, and as you said, I lost all my access. Very Happy I turned it back on and all is working fine again -- except my original problem of not being able to access the RT31P2 from a computer connected to my WCG200 remains.

Please let me know if you think of anything else I can try.

If I understand things correctly, you want to be able to manage your RT31P2 router from its "INTERNET" port.

You'll need to log into the RT31P2 interface and enable the "Remote Administration" option. You'll find it under the Administration -> Management section.

Once you enable it and pick a port you will be able to manage your router from it's Internet port by heading to "http://<router's External IP address>:<portnumber>". In your above case if you stick with the default port of 8080, the URL would be http://192.168.0.18:8080

Hope this helps.

P.S. By default the router will not respond to ping requests that come in on its INTERNET port. So the fact that you aren't getting ping replies doesn't tell you if the router is actually listening on that IP address or not. You can enable ping replies on the Security page of the router as well by Disabling the "Block Anonymous Internet Requests" option.

Thanks, Random. It worked like a charm once I added the port number to my url.

I changed the port number to something else other than the default of 8080 to make it less easy to guess and hopefully increase the security at least a little.

Is my RT31P2 a security risk now that I've enabled remote administration? Since it sits behind my other router, I assume it is not directly accessible from the Internet, but I am not sure about that.

Since my RT31P2 sits behind my main router, I don't use it for anything but the phone, and there are no devices connected to the ethernet ports on the the RT31P2. They are all connected to my main router.

thanks random.
fletcher: your device doesn't have an external IP address and isn't accessible from the "outside" so it doesn't matter what port you use. only if it were in the DMZ of your main router would it be a risk.
