PostPosted: Thu Feb 03, 2005 8:57 pm    Post subject: sending fax over Vonage to an Audix system Reply with quote Back to top

I tried hooking up my PC's fax modem to my Vonage line (I unplugged the regular phone that was in "phone 1") and tried sending a Fax using "send fax" application from XP. Now if I call my work number and no one answers, it forwards to an Audix voice mail system which will detect fax calls and save them electronically for viewing from my work PC. When I tried doing this, I kept getting "line busy" from the fax application. If I switch the PC back to my landline, it worked fine.

Any ideas why this wouldn't work via Vonage? My work phone is on a Voip (local) network (like a PBX), could this also be an issue? I don't have a number I can call that will go to a plain old fax machine to see if that works.

there are a lot of issues with faxing over Vonage (and Voip in general), but several people on this forum and others have reported using xp to send faxes successfully.
usually there's somewhere to turn on the speaker on the fax modem. can you do this? by hearing where the problem is occuring it seems like it would be a lot easier to troubleshoot.

I did have the speaker on and could hear the outgoing dialing but I never heard anything after that. I didn't hear my audix greeting, so I assume the audix system detected it as a fax.

I wonder if there is a time factor, but I assume I would have gotten "no answer" vs "line busy" if it timed out. I'm not sure how the audix system answers to see oif it's a fax call or not before playing the normal voice greeting...

I can tell you from personal experience that if I dial too fast, it won't go through. usually I'll get a redial signal though. but just for giggles, can you put a comma (or whatever pause is in that program) in between each number?

I thought you could only fax through line 2. And that you had to pay the 9.99 setup fee and 9.99 a month with a seperate number to do that? Is this true or do they just want you to pay the extra to have a different phone number?

if you buy a fax line they can do some minor tweaks that they usually don't do on the voice line (degrades the voice quality I assume) but it doesn't have to be line 2 and you don't have to buy one. faxing works fine for a lot of people, but many have trouble with it also.

I haven't tried changing the delay between digits, but I was able to dial out from the fax modem to a work modem pool. Not sure if that would be any different than dialing to a fax.
