Unless you've changed from the default, use a blank username and "admin" as the password.

well that's strange. I really have no idea what to tell you. I can tell you that your problem is you can't connect to vonage's servers. why, I'm not sure. you may want to call sbc about it and ask if they're blocking any ports. also, is there a model number associated with that speedstream?

You mentioned that you used PPPoE with SBC. Do you also have to register your MAC address?

if he did then the internet wouldn't work through it. the only thing not working here is Vonage. besides sbc or the modem itself blocking ports, I'm really at a loss. Hopefully he'll come back with the modem model number soon.

Well, found someone at Vonage who sent me a new router.

Same results. This is very simple. Wall-->dsl modem ---> router ---> wired computer. Can surf but phone lights never go on at all and no calls.

plug the computer directly into the modem. take the router completely out of the picture. make sure you have an internet connection. then do the tftp test referenced above. if you still can't connect, it's my understanding that there is an issue somewhere with your isp or possibly your modem that is blocking access to vonage's tftp server (which is where the router has to connect to to get firmware updates and such. if it can't connect there, it won't even try to connect to vonage's sip servers. disclaimer: this is my understanding and may not be 100% correct.)

What's the model number on the Speedstream SBC installed at your location?

tftp tftp.vonage.net get test works with the router pkugged in and not plugged in. But I still don't get phone lines, alas. What now. Someone help me.

The Modem is a speedstream 5360. I can browse the net with the modem alone and through the RT31P2. What I can't do is get teh phone lines to work, even for a second. They never light up. This is my second router from Vonage. I have a very simple connectins: Wall --> DSL modem ---> router ---> wired PC running XP professional.

Malvolio,

This sounds to me like Vonage has the wrong MAC address for your RT31P2.

Open the config screen on your router (http://192.168.0.1) and copy down the MAC address. Then call Vonage again and make sure that MAC address is the same one they have activated for you.

Since you've tried two routers and since you're able to surf the net with your computer using the router, I would guess that it is more likely an account settings problem at Vonage than a hardware problem.

In fact, I would speculate that you had a hardware problem with the first router and that the second one works but Vonage still has the MAC address of the first router on your account!

Good luck. Hope you get this working soon.

Received second router from Vonage.

Can still browse the net through the router. Still don't get phone lights, etc. So, no phone service. On phone hours with tech support. Now they will ship a third router.

Why don't I have confidence in this? What I need is an engineer1!
