My sister has tried to call me from Manhattan (I'm in Chicago). She says she got a fast busy tone on several tries until she successfully got through to me. In my past experience with POTS this meant the interstate trunk lines were at capacity. This should not happen with Voip since it's packet based.

What is the cause of fast busy tones on Vonage?

Fast busy does mean that there is network congestion somewhere. It doesn't necessarily mean it's within Vonage's network, however. Although Vonage is IP-based, it still relies on LECs to deliver the service to the consumer. If the LEC (local exchange carrier) has congestion within their network, that will definitely cause a network busy signal, or a fast busy signal.

It could also be somewhere within Vonage's network, but frankly, it's far more likely that it's the LEC's fault.

Thanks for your answer...I assume that the congestion occurs at my sister's LEC since from there on it enters the IP cloud.

Well, it is likely that the problem lies within the LEC, although each phone call you make can pass through any number of carriers' circuits, so who knows for sure...

Take care!

The fast busy tone is also known as the "reorder tone". It can also mean that you have dialed a number that is no longer in service, or that you have dialed an invalid number. Recordings are not always available.

Ask your sister to repeat to you the number that she is dialing. I have 2 Vonage numbers - one of which is a virtual number. My sister lives 1,000 miles away from me, and I have a Virtual number in her city. The funny thing is that both of my numbers, the one in this city, and the one in my sister's city, both start with 482. The area code and the rest of the number is different. She got her wires crossed and started calling my 482 number here, instead of my 482 number where she lives. The number was never in service in her city, and she was getting a reorder tone. She kept telling me that there was something wrong with my number - it would not work. She had to call me long distance each time. After questioning her, I found out that she was dialing the wrong number, leaving off the area code.

Hi,

Thanks for all the help. The number my sister is calling is a number I transferred from my POTS line. When I was using POTS there were no occurences of fast busy signals. This leads me to believe that there's something about the way Vonage handles the call from NYC although I can't figure it out.

One clue is when I called into an 800 call center (not New Jersey located) they thought I was calling from New Jersey (which happens to be where Vonage is headquartered). Maybe metro NYC calls are intercepted by the NJ Vonage LEC somehow and they are always busy? Just a guess.

I hope someone from Vonage is monitoring this thread.

Multiple call attempts from NYC to my Chicago located phone number have been encountering fast busys.

This morning I was informed by a business colleague located in Portland, OR that he too had to dial several times before he got through.

I don't accept the theory that this is caused by congestion on the POTS trunk lines or in anyway is inflicted by the POTS network.

I have never received fast busys like this until I switched to Vonage. I am located in central Chicago and the people who are calling me are located in major metropolitan areas who have switching centers capable of handling large volumes of calls.

Until proven otherwise I have to assume that this is caused somehow by the way Vonage implements Voip.

Am I the only one with this recurrent problem?

last-call,

Vonage had a network-wide issue today. It has since been resolved (atleasr that's what it shows on my dashboard).. It was mostly outbound (out from Vonage), a few folks had reported the same problem (fast-busy or going to voice mail) on the inbound.
You might want to check this thread out for the outage : http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic3004.html

Not sure if this is/was the problem encountered by your sister..
Hope that helps..

Log into your Vonage account dashboard and look at the announcements. There was an outage this morning. This was posted there promptly and also discussed in a long thread on this forum. That mght be related to the problems you and your colleagues experienced.
