I'm sure this question has probably been asked before, but I can't seem to find anything about it on here. I currently have local service with Sprint (in the process of being transferred over to Vonage) and long distance with a different carrier. I know Vonage is handling the transfer of my phone number from Sprint, but what about my long distance... do I need to cancel that myself? I have my adapter and everything setup so I'm only making outbound calls on my Vonage phone at this point... no real need to keep the long distance on the land line, but I just wanted to make sure that I wouldn't screw up the transfer process by cancelling it myself.

I hope that makes sense. Thanks in advance.

You can only have one carrier for local and long distance. So when you sign up for a new one (vonage) that automatically disconnects your current.

I too have recently moved to Vonage and have SBC for my local and MCI for my long distance carrier. I'm not sure what MrMike meant by not being able to have two different carriers, I do.

If you recently switched to Vonage you no longer have SBC for local and MCI for long distance, you only have Vonage for both. When the LNP was complete your accounts with SBC & MCI were both cancelled

You had one carrier for long distance and one carrier for local. You can only have one for each. So when you switch to Vonage (for example) you have Vonage for local and Vonage for long distance and it automatically cancels your old ones.

I should fix this by saying you can only have one for each per phone number. Of course you can have multiple phone numbers each with their own local and long distance carrier.

Don't count on anyone to disconnect anything. You can bet that they will keep you on the hook as long as your footing the bill. Cancel it yourself and be done with it.

Do not cancel anything if your number is being ported. I will just cause problems. After the number is ported to Vonage then call up your old carrier and long distance and confirm your disconnect at that time,

this is true. do not cancel (or add) anything until your number has been ported. doing so will only delay your port even longer. the main things you cannot have on the line are: DSL (if switching to cable or moving the dsl to another number), identa-ring/ringmaster (you authorize Vonage to remove if you don't), and Centrex/ISDN.

Thanks for all the responses. Now I just hope my transfer goes smoothly (fingers crossed).
