Post subject: When should I cancel my phone number?
FINALLY got my
Vonage
Router today! WOW! I love it! Everything worked out of the box without a problem. My question, is no that I want to keep the service, I want to tranfer my Qwest phone number. I want to know when I should cancel my service with Qwest. And, once they transfer the number, does the phone company issue you a new number, or does your line just sit their without one?
Also, does anyone know if the phone company charges fees to do this transfer? If this is going to end up costing me ton, I'll just keep the number
Vonage
gave me.

Here is the exact email I received from
Vonage
. Make sure you go over the lFAQ's at javascript:openWin('https://www.vonage.com/help/index.php?topic=lnp_faq', 'activityWin', 'width=500,height=500,scrollbars=yes')
Make sure the # does not have DSL,does not have a personalized (distinctive ring) number associated with it, you have a current copy (less than 30 days old), of your Quest phone bill,, remeber all information on your Quest acct and
Vonage
acct MUST be identical or your LNP process will be slowed..i.e. service address and account owner's name.If there are any descrepancies, try changing the Vonage's info to match your Quest acct. Also note that
Vonage
will submit the Disconnect order on your behalf to help make the transition seamless.
Account Number: 100348XXXX
Dear Linda & Louis Jones,
Thank you for placing your order with
Vonage
.
Your order is being processed and we will notify you by email
when it is shipped.
**PLEASE NOTE**: You have directed
Vonage
to assign your
existing phone number to
Vonage
service. Before we can
assign your number, your former telephone carrier must first process
your request. Once your former carrier releases this number,
Vonage
assigns it to you immediately.
**IMPORTANT**: In order to begin the Number Transfer Process,
Vonage
must receive your Letter of Authorization (LOA)
form as well as a recent copy of your local phone bill.
In the interim,
Vonage
provides you with a courtesy
temporary virtual number. This number is labeled (VIRTUAL) in the
paragraph below. Please feel free to use this number until your
carrier releases your existing number. Please note that transferring
your number can take at least 15 - 20 business days upon receipt of
complete and correct paperwork.
Vonage
will keep you informed of the
transfer process via email along the way.
Your new
Vonage
Telephone Numbers,
Voicemail Access Numbers and temporary Voicemail PINs are:
Phone Number Voicemail Access Number PIN
1-(281)-337-xxxx 1-(281)-576-7499 1234
1-(281)-576-xxxx (VIRTUAL) NA NA
You can set up your voicemail at any time by calling your Voicemail Access Number and following the instructions.
Your 11-Digit
Vonage
phone number is your mailbox number.
For your protection, please change your Voicemail PIN as
soon as possible.
Please take a few minutes to review the details of your order.
Hope this was some help, here's a summary of my LNP process with
Vonage
and Verizon. Mine went EXTREMELY smooth compared to others that I've heard about.
Status History for: 1281337xxxx
Current Status: Transfer Completed Temp Virtual Number : 1281576xxxx Transfer Date: January 7, 2005
Updated Date: Number Transfer Progress History:

My areacode isn't listed as one of the areacodes
Vonage
has a presence. Does that mean that they cant transfer my phone number to the
Vonage
line? I'm hopingthat since I do have Verizon, I should be able to do the same...

The website has a utility that will verify if you can keep your number.
http://www.vonage.com/features.php?feature=lnp
Look on this page on the right side...Enter your area code and exchange, it will say you
can
or
can NOT
keep your number.
Learn if we can transfer your existing number here:
Please enter your area code and the first three digits of your phone number.

Son of a...
i was given the impression that I could keep my number when I was on the phone with the rep last month...
hell there's no point in having
Vonage
if i cant get a local number.
Is this a technical issue, or can i get the FCC involved and get them to force verizon to relinquish my number?

I heard
Vonage
charges to do this. I also read somewhere that someone got credited for changing their number within the 14 day trial. Should I do this over the web, or should I call them to transfer my number?

But, is there a way to avoid being charged for the process, and if so, should I just do it over the web, or call them to invoke the transfer?
