As you may know, I would love to switch to Vonage. I have figured out how to set the entire thing up, with help from you all. After reading this forum for a few weeks now, I considering staying with the good old reliable phone service I have now. Vonage would be cheaper, but it seems to have too many problems, most commonly:
POTS phone # transfer taking way too long
Linksys RT31P2 continuous, seemingly endless problems
complex install neede for me
Vonage's complete lack of customer support, and tech support
No Vonage when power is out, unless I invest $40-80 in a UPS unit
trial period being too short

My question: what do you all think I should do? Give it a try, (for 5-7 days) or wait until Vonage fixes its problems and keeps up with all the new customers?
Please advise-I really don't know what to do.
Question

It's all up to you. After 20 business days I had to email dslreports@vonage.com about my LNP. That SAME DAY, it went through. As far as the service, NO substantial issues to report. We can't tell you what to do, only tell you of our experiences! Smile

Question

You can't really get a good idea of how well Vonage works by reading forums that have a high proportion of members who register because they are having problems. If you went to a hospital to see how human beings work, you'd probably choose to be something else. Very Happy

I have a Linksys RT31P2, which I received in four days after ordering (including 2 weekend days). It worked perfectly right out the box with no tweaks. I don't have the white noise problem some people have discussed here.

You should do whatever you feel is right for you, but please don't judge the overall Vonage experience by reading this forum. A few folks here are just Vonage addicts, techies or company reps, but a disproportionate number of topics are originated by people who come here for a few hours or days to find a solution to a problem. Probably most Vonage users who are satisfied never post here.

The solutions offered to the problems that are posted here are sometimes Vonage's fault, but they are frequently not related to Vonage or its equipment. The one consistent complaint here that probably does hold is that the company has grown too fast to keep up with its customer service needs. That will probably be corrected over time, but be prepared to wait a long time on hold if you need customer service -- or be prepared to wait as much as two weeks or longer for an email response.

All in all, I really like this service. I may change my mind if I ever have to deal with Customer Service -- but I'd probably just PM one of the Vonage tech support guys on this forum instead of contacting the company directly.

If you are not network savvy then I would suggest you to wait.
If the landline phone is MUST for daily use then then I would suggest you to wait.

Till Vonage improves their customer service, I would suggest you to wait.

For me so far everything worked great including the voice quality (LNP waiting ...less than 20 days and counting), but reading at others problems at this forum makes newcomers to Sprint

Vonage can improve only with acquistion by another big telco company, till that time I don't see how they can improve their customer service with their low prices and free month coupons.

Vonage is attracting customers every day but at the same time they are loosing them.

But if you are brave enough then come on board MiB

If you have a cell phone I would go for it. No cell phone I would be a little uneasy. I think a lot of people are like me, I switched because my land line is not as important to me as it once was and I can live with a few headaches now and then to save $15-20 bucks a month. I love all the bells and whistles Vonage throws in. A lot of bang for the buck. Very Happy

I am like pitroad, above, I have a cell phone with 1000 minutes a month, I could afford to go for it and I have been pleasantly surprized for my trouble. However, your situation might not be like mine. I would say jump in with both feet and get Vonage. What will change tomorrow, or the next day? Keep the landline until you feel satisfied that all is going well. Remember, you have a 14 day trial period to return the box if you're dissatisfied.

Mike
