Post subject: Old NID (1965 House) Help - Need Wiring Confirmation Please!
Hello!
My father is a new
Vonage
customer and would like to hook the box up so we can utilize the house's wiring. I went to look at the NID box for the house and it is an older style box. Our house is a single residential home built in 1965. We have already cancelled our AT&T landline service. Phones connected to our house wiring have no dial tone.
Vonage
service is already on and our landline's telephone number was successfully transferred to them. Our
Vonage
goes through our cable internet service.
Its clear the AT&T phone service from the street is the "heavy black cable" wiring coming in and attaching the left side ground point. This heavy black wire has four "heavy" wires (red/green and black/yellow). The heavy red/green cables are attached to the top posts, while the heavy black/yellow cables are attached to the lower posts. The house's wiring is attached only to the top posts (thin red/green cable and white/orange and brown/orange wires).
It is also clear (not in the picture) that at one point the house was wired for ADSL, though we no longer have that service. There is a ADSL splitter attached to the house wires, but ultimately the feed point for those are to the white/orange and brown/orange wires attached to the top posts. I do not believe I need to muck around with those.
Our set up looks very typical of Bascotie's NID in this post:

I believe I only need to detach the "heavy" red/green/black/yellow wires from the four posts to disconnect completely from AT&T, but I would like confirmation that this is the safest, and correct way to proceed.
In a nutshell:
Questions:
1. Disconnecting these four cables is the safest way to proceed? I will, of course, wrap those wire ends with electrical tape and leave a warning notice card in the NID to prevent re-connection.
2. This still leaves the electrical GROUND intact for the home wiring?
Thanks in advanced for confirmation!
