PostPosted: Mon Jan 31, 2005 3:47 pm    Post subject: Vonange Fix Our caller ID/ANI, Toll Free/310 Issue[ADMIN ED] Reply with quote Back to top

Have VONANGE FIX OUR CALLER ID/ANI, TOLL FREE/310 ISSUE.

Vonage routes its calls from the US. Yes they fixed the NJ caller ID issue last summer.

Please tell them to make our CANADIAN calls orginate in CANADA. We can not dial a lot of Canadian numbers because of that. We can not dial most Canadian toll free companies, think of it, Banks, Security Companies, Services, everything.

THe problem lies with the Automatic Number Identification, nothing do with caller id. ANI is before caller id, It appears to the Canadian numbers as an Pheonix number still or sometimes a Jersey Number.

This is also is a legal issue. Since vonage is offering this to Canada. They have the local numbers, but its still orginating the US.

They need to set up a trunk in Canada or do something since this is corrected.

When we call Fedex, we get Fedex USA, samething with UPS.

This is what would fix our problems. What good is paying 45 dollars a month when you can not dial numbers. This will also fix 310-xxxx numbers, which many companies use.

Please have vonage setup outgoing trunk numbers in every where code they operate in Canada. We even pay in Canadian dollars. They even have the Canadian flag on their logo at www.vonage.ca Isnt misleading we cant even dial Canadian numbers.

The ANI is populated with a Canadian number right? I wonder why UPS/Fedex etc don't pick up the # correctly.

In anycase, if there were to have a canadian presence, our service costs will probably go up substantially.

I am not so sure that the costs would go up substantially. It is the cost of doing business! If they raise prices, people would start switching to Primus or Rogers, Shaw, Videotron, Eastlink, and a host of other Canadian Cable providers that are now or soon will be offering VoIP. I spoke with Vonage a long time ago (months ago) on the phone about the 1-800 issue, and it was explained to me that calls to 1-800 numbers originate in the US and are dialed from a US server. Even though the server is passing a Canadian number for the caller id, the actual number of the line placing the call is not a Canadian line. I can transfer my friend to another number, and during Call Transfer, my number does not show up on the calling party's phone. It is the number (and name) of the person I'm doing the transfer for. So even though I'm placing the call using my line, the call display information is being intercepted. I think we are talking about two different things. The 1-800 system does not look at Caller id and it never has even before Caller id existed. It knows where your call is coming from anyhow, and if it is a server in the US placing the actual call, but passing your caller id information, it will still appear to be a US caller to the network.

What needs to be done is Vonage needs to route all calls to 800 numbers to a server in Canada. The problem may be that they have no ability right now to determine that your call should originate in Canada. I do not know what the issues are. Maybe they feel the business they have received from Canada has been so minimal, that they are not going to bother.

I have a cell phone, and would likely not even consider VoIP without having a cell phone or another line that is not VoIP. I can get through to most numbers using Vonage, and on the rare occasion that I cannot use Vonage, I use my cell phone.

No, the ANI contains a pheonix number I believe, i think a 646 area code, even now it still does.

They do have a canadian presence. they just need to fix that and our calls would appear or would actually orginate in canada. i mean they own like 25000 canadian telephone numbers.

I just found this out this past weekend, I was trying to dial CIC and OHIP and I couldn't reach either.. I reached OHIP by dialling their Toronto 416 phone number, no problem since we dont' pay LD anyways.. but CIC's TO number says it's been changed to their 1-888 #, have to use the cell for that call I guess.. 310 numbers are the biggest pain, cuz you can't dial them form a cell or from vonage, altho, you CAN dial them from an UN-activated Bell Landline phone.. I used to have a phone lugged in to my un-activated bell landline jack, just for 911 cals and such, and for the hell of it I tried to dial some numbers, when I tried 310-1010 (pizza hut) I got pizza hut.. lol.. I hung up.. so, if you need to dial 310 numbers, and you haven't d/c'd your home wireing to use your vonage, you can still dial the 310# from that line, you'd just have to give them a call back number..

Interesting... Do you know why if the ANI is populated with an incorrect number, the Caller ID still shows up OK? Does Caller ID use another field?

The 310 numbers didn't work from my old cell phone, and I used to use a US cell that left me in 800 number hell (I couldn't dial Canadian only 800 numbers because it apparently knew I should be US, but I couldn't dial US only ones because it knew I was calling from Canada. I never understood why, but the only ones I could dial were ones that were active for both US and Canada).

I used to use an old Bell dial-around roaming number. Let me dig it out and see if it works with Vonage. Besides the fact that I always had to explain to the Pizza Hut man why I was giving him not only a US number but why another number showed up on his screen, it did work for ordering pizza.

Ahh.. that is where you are wrong my friend.. they don't own any numbers.. they get the numbers from XO communications in the US (not sure who in CANADIA).... so they are actually terminating the incoming calls on that equipment rather then their own.

In Canada, the numbers are registered to GT Group Telecom Services Corp.
