Weird experience this weekend . . .
I was working Saturday AM from from home using Terminal Services on a web server, moved some files to the ftp for retreival. Could then not connect to the server, so requested a reboot, went for a walk. Came back the re-boot was accomplished, but still could not connect, so I disconnected the cable modem and Vonage router and reconnected after about a minute, at which time the Vonage router (a Motorola VT2142) had lost all of its settings and lost connection with Vonage.
Called Vonage Tech suport, the first guy worked through with me pretty well, rolled the update back and all seemed to work, however th DHCP in the router was no longer working. Did a reset on the router and the lost phone. Caled Vonage tech support again, different guy, and finally he decided that based on trace routes, there was a firewall between my ISP and Vonage. I pointed out it could be something else, but he said, based on a discussion with his upper level networking folks, that I should not be running the bandwidth I have through through the VT2142. Get a better router, attach the Vonage device to the backside of the "new" router. He totaly ignored that I had been running this config for better than three years.
I said I would wait and see what happens. After sleeping on it, I stuck with my origional hunch that the VT2142 was toast, since it still could not perform basic DHCP functions Fortunately Vonage has seen fit to retail their products, so picked up a new VDV21 at Micro Center , and all is well. Proably should have threatened to cancel my accunt and received a new Vonage device, but who wants to wait a week or two.
Sometimes folks tend to overthink the solution. |
