Attempting to use the Linksys RT31P2 on SBC (Illlllinois) DSL line. The DSL has dynamic IP addressing. I can't keep a connection. Configuration:
DSL Modem | Linksys RT31P2 | US Robotics Wireless Router with DHCP disabled. | | | Some wireless connections | Linksys 24 port switch for Ethernet LAN
There are only a total of about 6 machines on the network at any time, so bandwidth is not a serious issue.
Do I need to upgrade the DSL line to Static IP addressing??????????
Thanx for any help. The Vonage tech had me try several redial schemes, but they didn't work over the long term.

Connection type: PPPoE Redial 20 sec. Dynamic IP Local DHCP enabled; start at 192.168.15.100; 50 addresses I have one printer on the switch assigned a fixed IP of 192.168.15.20 The Vonage tech that I talked to recommended one unusual change: The client lose time defaults to 0 minutes. He told me to type in 00000 minutes and then save. That worked for about a day, then lost connection again. The setup page again reads 0 minutes. |

Try and turn on logging,a nd fire up a syslog client on your pc. it may be that your dsl is getting disconnected and it has to reconnect?
i'm not sure, i''ve never really worked with dsl.... just trying to offer a suggestion on nailing down the problem (syslog == nice) |

I recall seeing the option to turn on the logging.
Pardon my inexperience, but how do I set up the syslog client?
At the moment, I have reverted to my old wireless canopy service for broadband, but I will go back to the DSL once I have the test configuration setup properly.
For about two years, I have been using a wireless canopy service because SBC didn't have DSL in the area (despite having a switching station less than 1/4 mile away) and cable won't come into an industrial park. The canopy service is much more expensive than DSL, so I want to switch. The DSL account is a business grade, 3 meg down, 500 k upstream. The canopy service is fixed IP, and has been extremely reliable. I'm having second thoughts about the SBC/Yahoo DSL service. |

Just read the thread referred by reebok. That confirms my suspicions about the dynamic/static IP issue. Getting a static IP from SBC will still be cheaper and faster than my canopy service. And it sounds like it should be more reliable, especially for a business. The redial/repeated ping scheme sounds like a kludge, to me.
Any more thoughts??????????? |

reebok, I don't understand your comment:
besides it not being set on pppoe (would it work anyway?)
I thought I have the RT31P2 setup as PPPoE. |
