From looking at other Voip solutions and problems.

The Echo, they recommend changing the Voice QOS from 256kbps to Auto..

The Modem/Tivo problem appears to be Vonage blocking this type of traffic from coming across the Voice QOS..

Well see what incorrect information I get from front line tech support.

jim: what isp and cable modem do you have and what is your network setup? also, does the problem seem to occur at a certain time of the day or just completely randomly?

If the echo problem is heard by the remote user then the problem is occurring at YOUR end of the connection.

It is quite possible that this echo is occurring when people call on your landline however the delay is so short that it sounds like the normal "sidetone" you would get on a phone (i.e. deliberate feedback from mouthpiece to earpiece to control the volume of your voice). Voip introduces more delay and makes the echo more obvious.

Echo can be caused by several problems:-
- A traditional phone has a two wire connection to the phone network - hence you are actually sending and receiving signals over the same pair of wires. This is only possible as the characteristics of those wires (impedance) and the phone are known and hence the CO or gateway can "disentangle" the signals. If the wiring or the phone have different characteristics then it can make the process of separating the signals harder. Gateways often have echo cancellers - note that the echo canceller in your gateway is trying to cancel the echo from your side of the gateway (i.e. to help the person at the other end).

- Acoustic echo is audio feedback from the speaker in your handset to the microphone. Echo can be caused by you simply holding the handset away from your ear - hence your ear is not "muting" the sound from the speaker. Again - this is quite common however on regular phone calls we don't notice as the delay is so short.

Hello,
I have searched this forum, and could not find an exact answer to my problem. I have been a Vonage subscriber for 2 weeks now, and most, not all people i call or have called me mention that they can hear an echo of themselves talking, but I sound fine to them as they sound to me. I have tried playing with the bandwidth saver to no avail. Any one else have or had this problem, and have any suggestions?
Thanks again
Jim

Jim,

I had this occur for the first time today(I've only been using Vonage since Monday 1/31). I called home from my work phone and heard a slight echo. It was intermittent. Not every sentence was echoed back to me. It was a minor annoyance and hopefully won't happen too often.
Coincidentally, I also use Prolog (256K/3M).
