Post subject: Whats the latest from Vonage on Tivo dial-in?
I thought they were working on a solution however I haven't heard anything in quite a while on this subject. I realize that this is generally not a huge issue but for me its definately a nuisance since it causes my Tivo to slow down quite a bit and I can't get updates. Probably my only complaint with
Vonage
so far.
I know alot of Tivo owners are
Vonage
users as well and it would be great to see
Vonage
do something about this. Although with the progression of Tivo using broadband I'm not sure that anything will actually be done.
Anyone have additional thoughts or news on this subject?
Thanks

I think you're right on here. I personally use broadband for updates -- have since version 3.x and I would not have it any other way. I have other
Vonage
issues (dial-up connection to office, home alarm system, etc) which I hope to work out, but as far as TiVo is concerned, I think you should (and should want to) make the leap to broadband. Lots of other benefits there too, considering Home Media and TiVoToGo. If you have a series one (assuming since you still use the modem) you can easily upgrade it to support network access. Weaknees.com and 9thTee.com are good places to start.

VoIP

Dude...I know this....but what I don't understand is why every post you put ont his forum you sound irritated. One would think that
Vonage
would want someone who actually has patience to answer questions.
Anyways I understand dial-up is not what
VoIP
is meant for (I'm a Computer Engineer man) but like you said I"ve heard that there were possible fixes in the near future that would help this situation, and I just wanted an update as to when they plan to be available. And if its NOT A
VONAGE
FIXABLE ISSUE then why is
VONAGE
supposidly coming out with a POTENTIAL FIX!!!
^^I own a DirectTV Tivo so I don't currently have the option to update via Broadband but hopefully they will add this in the future and I'll use it but until DirectTV gets their act together I'd like to be able to use the phone option.
So I'll ask my question again...anyone know when/if these fixes will come?
THanks for the info

JScott,
Clearly I phrased wrong -- my issues are a result of switching to
Vonage
(
VOIP
) not because of
Vonage
. I understand the technology limitations, even moreso since I got the service. What I'm coming to find, (and I am a new user -- 6 days in) is that it is a bit of "you get what you pay for". I'm not knocking the
Vonage
service, mind you, but as far as a complete solution (fax/modem, alarm systems and the like) it seems that POTS has more versatility and reliability for non-voice usage.
Somethings will take some getting used to.

There are modifications you can use to get your directivo to update through broadband. It will require you to 'void your warrenty' so do it at your own risk:
http://www.9thtee.com/tivoupgrades.htm
they have a wired, and wireless option, along with a device which adds a psudo caching controller on the IDE bus which speeds up over-all IO.
for the record, i've only worked with the wired tivonet adapter, actually, i worked with the one before it which converted the proprietary internal adapter to an ISA, which was then sent to a 10bT ISA network adapter...

I agree with 100% on JScott, he offers nothing constructive and seems irritated and his posts always scream and yell. I would think
Vonage
would not want him here, because if this is what is representing the Customer Service I wouldn't want any parts of their company.
I have spoken with a representative on the Executive Support Team that has informed me that
Vonage
has a team that is working with TiVo and trying to remedy a solution for series 2 machines to call in. If they are working on it it is because they know if they can offer it more people will convert, you have to get the tech savvy first.
If you want your machine to call an get updates, do what I did. I have a DirecTV TiVo and I use the serial connection on the rear of the unit to connect PPP through my Windows XP. It works. All information can be found here:

Make sure you turn off your firewall and set an IP range. You will see what I am talking about when you get there. There is a link to buy the null modem cable from 9thtee and then a post or 2 below there is a link on how to set your PC. It's easy and works EVERY time!

For a service that isn't supposed to work with faxes,
Vonage
is not the slightest bit bashful about selling it. "In our product testing, we have never encountered a fax machine that does not work over the
Vonage
network."
http://www.
vonage
.com/features.php?feature=fax
http://www.
vonage
.com/help_knowledgeBase_article.php?article=326
They also don't shy away from TiVo, either. "Many
Vonage
customers have successfully setup DirecTV and TiVo series2 connections through the
Vonage
Phone Adapter."
http://www.
vonage
.com/help_knowledgeBase_article.php?article=389
To quote you from another thread (
vonage
-forum.com/ftopic1830-0.html" target="_blank">http://www.
vonage
-forum.com/ftopic1830-0.html ), "those of you who go into this blindly without ANY IDEA what
VoIP
is or what to expect from the technology, well as they say, 'There is NO excuse for ignorrance!'"
So ignorance can be construed as trusting consumers believing what they see, in writing, at the
Vonage
website about the
Vonage
service? And anybody who relies on the information
Vonage
has published, yet fails to obtain, read, and become knowledgable of the technical specifications for
VoIP
, is negligent because they failed to educate themselves?
Man... I'd better do some research into this product in a bright red can on my desk, that goes by the name Coke. I might be drinking kerosene without knowing it. I mean it SAYS it's a refreshing cola beverage... but apparently it's my responsibility to independently verify that claim.
I hope I've made my point.

Post subject: Thanks - You helped me with my decision NOT to use Vonage
Whay kind of a company lets a moron like that post rave-out messages to customers? No REAL company would let a clown like that be in the same AREA CODE with a customer - much less communicate with one.
Got a problem with
Vonage
? YOU must be an IDIOT because it's not THEIR problem!
I've been looking into the
Vonage
VOIP
thing for a few days - and these people aren't ready for prime time. Game-Set-Match.
I'm not willing to risk my business communications with these knuckleheads.
Best of luck to the rest of you...
