Hi,

I am using Vonage and a friend wants me to hook them up.

I'm just wondering if ther are any advange from going the retail route or going tough Vonage. Are there advantages or disadvantages one way or the other?

Also, I know there are several different Vonage adapters if I go the retail route. Can someone tell me the difference between the adapters.

Just as an FYI they are currently using a linksys wired/wireless router in one and the magority of the time they are wireless.

Thank you,

TC

Quite honestly, it makes very little difference. Vonage supplies a Linksys RT31P2 broadband router with phone ports. Retail outlets usually sell the Linksys PAP2. (consult www.linksys.com for product info)

Money-wise, it's a tiny bit cheaper (less than $20) to go retail and wait for the rebate, but you must remain a customer for more than 90 days to qualify. I ordered from Vonage solely because I didn't feel like waiting half an eternity to get my $50 back.

Speed-wise, if you go retail, you'll probably be making phone calls within 10 minutes of arriving home. Ordering from Vonage means a 5-10 day wait while the order is processed, adapter is configured, and finally shipped via UPS Ground. On the up-side, if the adapter is defective, Vonage will replace it. If you buy retail, you will be subject to their return/exchange terms.

I'm sure others will have something to add to this.

One observation.
If the ATA does not work, its is easier to get a replacement from Vonage directly than from the local store.

I know that Radio Shack sells the Motorola (that I own and the 2 linksys). Any thoughts LinkSys vs. Motorola?

Any thoughts on funcianality? I know I have had complaints about the Motorola and so have others are the linksys better?

I guess I also have one other side question. Are there any advantages of me contacting Vonage and "upgrading" my Motorola adapter?

If you have a friend or family that already has Vonage.. they can get two free months of service and you get one free month for the referral.. and likewise you could sign up through David's referral link on this site and still get a free month of service. I've already referred 3 friends and family (6 months free service (minus taxes and extras(virtual #'s etc...)). Wink Wink Wink

Before we get to off topic. I'm going to post my orginal follow up question.

I know that Radio Shack sells the Motorola adapter and the 2 linksys. Any thoughts LinkSys vs. Motorola?

Any thoughts on funcianality? I know I and others have had complaints about the Motorola. Are the linksys an improvement?

TC

I'm a bit conserd cause I know in the past linksys has build very poor quailty network hardware. I have not found a linksys that hasn't had problems.

Thank you again,

TC
