Post subject: does the RT 1.26.01 firmware solve all problems???
Hi All,
Is this the latest firmware for the RT31P2 and does it solve the Massive Bandwith consumption and dysfunctional QoS feature?
Also, what is the value you are supposed to put for Upstream Rate in QoS (some people say its my ISPs upload rate, others say its what I want to limit the RT comsuption rate, i.e. 90*2 (for conference call) = 180)?
And... is there a way to get the firmware from the web or something? Vonage's phone support ****. sometime they don't know what you are talking about and that's after more than 20+ minues of being on hold!.
Vonage
, please hire more Customer Support staff!
Thanks for any help in advance.

Dunno... didn't have those problems on my unit.

As I understand it, you set it to your actual upstream data rate. That way the modem knows how much "other" traffic to allow during a phone call without saturating the circuit. In reality, you're probably not going to get 100% of rated upstream capacity 100% of the time, so it's best to be a little conservative. For reference, my upstream is 384k, so I tell the router it's 320k.

Nope, this must be done by
Vonage
.

Try 30-60 minutes. If I ever got through in less than 30 minutes, I sure don't remember it.

Word is, they are hiring 600 new employees during the first half (first quarter?) of 2005.

Hrmm that doesn't sound like it would work (the QOS)... for instance... my upload bandwidth varies from 1.5 to 384 depending on the day... how much load other people are using, etc..

Will the router get updated to this automatically or is it only done when you call customer service? Last I checked I had the 1.24.xx firmware. My RT31P2 is currently behind my router and if it updates automatically now to the new version then I'll put it up front for a day so it will update. Otherwise I'll make no changes.

You have to call them. For whatever reason, they haven't pushed this firmware to all the routers. They were extremely nice and waited on the phone to make sure it was updated correctly. Make sure you don't call them from the
Vonage
line you are updating as the RT gets rebooted and you'll be disconnected.
I am now at the 1.26.01 Fireware with Voice Version: 2.0.12(LI)
I haven't started testing it (bandwidth consumption, QoS (not QOS), etc.). to see if this solves the issues.

If it varies THAT much, your provider is having capacity issues. In your instance, since you can only
count on
about 384k to be available at any given time, I would set Voice QoS somewhere around 320k.
What kind of service do you have, that you're getting 1.5M
up
stream?

Probably DSL, I have a friend that says he has that for his DSL connection out in Oklahoma City.

Not to hijack the thread on bandwidth comparisons, but I get 1.5Mb/s upstream with OptimumOnline (Cablevision) in NY...
