What's up,

New to the forum and Voip. I will be purchasing Vonage from Best Buy tonight and had a few quick questions. First, I am connected through Optimum Online. Is anyone using Optimum? If so, do you have any problems with speeds? Relating to that, I currently have a NetGear MR814v2 Wireless Router which has no problems. Which adaptor should I go with? I know, I searched and have read for days, but I wanted to know with using Optimum, is QoS worth the $70 it would cost for the wireless Linksys? Don't mind spending the money, but if QoS is no big deal, then I will be happy to keep my NetGear Router, and get the PAP2.

Looking forward to becoming a new Vonage customer!

best thing to do to learn about your specific connection is to do the tests at http://www.vonage-forum.com/voip-speed-test/ and testyourvoip.com (detailed results). if you don't understand the results, feel free to post them here.
your setup should work fine. if you want QoS, which is nice if you use the internet and talk on the phone at the same time, you could order direct from Vonage and get the linksys RT31P2 which is the same as the wireless linksys without the wireless. you do have to pay activation fee (I think it's waived until 1/31?) and shipping (9.95) for it. I would go with QoS myself, but it depends on how you're going to use your phone and computers.

I'm using Vonage with Optimum Online on Long Island. Works like a charm. See my other posts for my good experience so far.

I signed up online and got the Linksys RT31P2 router, which I just plugged in behind my existing router. Didn't need QOS, because Optimum provides tons of bandwidth. I run several PC's on my network and have Vonage set to the highest quality -- and I've not had a single bandwidth issue. I also have not had the white noise issue that some people have complained about with the Linksys adapters. (Knock on wood!)

I'd recommend you just keep your current router setup and plug in your new Vonage adapter (whichever one you choose) into the first ethernet port. Use your existing router's DHCP.

I almost got a PAP2 at BestBuy last week, but I decided to order online and got the more expensive RT31P2 at no cost to me. Can't compare the two adapters, but I can tell you I'm very satisfied with the RT31P2.

Good luck.

Thanks for the quick replies! I will run that test when I get home. One quick follow-up - I will be sending the connection through my whole house which is about 5-6 phones (I can get rid of one). Can any adapter handle this?

Thanks again for your quick reply.

I posted a question about it two weeks back, check here for difference between PAP2 and RT31P2 adapters.

The number of phones you can use has to do with REN. Read about it in mbhn5204's reply on this thread:
http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic2552.html .

I've heard somewhere that the practical limit with Vonage is about 5 lines, but I only use two and can't tell you whether it would work with 5-6 handsets. I kept my POTS line as a primary and only use the Vonage as a secondary, so two handsets is all I need to use.
