Good to hear that Vonage is ramping up their tech support.

I only hope they ramp up their training program and hold the line on quality.

Better to hold for 30 minutes for good info than 25 minutes for bad.

(although 5 minutes max is a worthy goal)

I can tell you that it's probably costing them customers. My mother is sooo annoyed with the problems that she's seriously considering switching back to Verizon.

I've almost had it with Vonage!

No dialtone since last night, phone rings and dead air, 35+ minute hold times, no response to my emails......

I've been a loyal Vonage customer for almost 8 months now... I'm no mad I'm seriously considering dumping them amd going back to *gasp* SBC (the uttimate evil)

Furious

Fortunately, I did not dump local Verizon service yet. Can't make a single Vonage call without the other party not being able to hear my voice. It worked last week (my first week of service) but has deteriorated over the last 7 days to garbage. I love the concept and am even willing to "fund" the development of this thing while working for free to fix problems - that's how much I hate the local telco's. But come on, what in the world are they advertising on TV for? Right now they can't even support the early-adopter customer base. I'm tired of the "latency" excuse and "I have to resolve it with me ISP" solution. I can only imagine the mess they are supporting behind the curtain right now.

I really hope someone at Vonage reads these threads. If not, I hope someone who does, and who has a connection at Vonage will forward them.

I have not had any problems, and have been with them for 3 months now. Today i can not make calls or receive calls. I was on hold for 45 minutes and then it said, that nobody could help me. No response to either email I have sent either. I am about 3 hours away from dumping them. I referred two people to them too, and I can convince them to leave as well. I do not want to, but this is absurd.

I finally got a 2nd or 3rd level tech to help me with my problems last night. I also have to say in spite of my frustration he was very knowledgable and helpful. Evidently, my ATA was not checking in with their servers. This could be a problem as there may be configuration changes that need to be made on your ATA or the checkin may have something to do with making sure their IP-PSTN routes are correct. In spite of the fact that the service is still unacceptable (I can now make calls but the audio out is still a problem), I did learn some of their problem resolution sequence. In general, if you are having problems with your service, power off your PC, your ATA, your rourter and cable modem. Disconnect the cable modem from the router and connect the ATA directly to the cable modem. This gets the router and PC out of the loop. Power up the cable modem and wait till it's onine. Then power up the ATA and wait till it's online. You should now have dial tone on the ATA and can do 80# (remember to take the phone off-hook and press the ATA button before 80#) to verify that the ATA did get an IP address. You should now be able to make calls. If you can't, you at least know it's not your router or ports you may or may not have forwarded. If you are lucky, your cable modem has 2 ports on it and your ISP allows more than 1 IP address to be assigned to the cable modem. You could plug your router into the other port on the cable modem and connect your PC into the router. Now your PC is protected by the router firewall while the ATA bypasses the router. I'm in the middle of testing how well the ATA---------->Cable modem combination works as well as trying out different makes of routers. I got the Vonage recommended D-Link DI-604 for $20 after rebates from Best Buy. I also got a Netgear MR814 for $25 after rebates from amazon. If they work better than my Linksys BEFW11S4 great. If not, they become Christmas presents.

You might try this, it fixed my router problems. Although my symtoms were the ones below.

MMsr

I signed up for Vonage about a week ago and almost gave up with trying to get it to work. I could not even get a dial tone wiith any of the suggested tricks even with tech support. Then I got thinking about the way things work. I have a Belkin router and VisionNet DSL modem. My problem turned out to be the router but since my home network is wired and wireless I did not want to buy a new router. If you look at the settings of your modem and see if DHCP is enabled, if it is you can hook up a cheap Netgear switch. Go from the modem to the uplink port of the switch then go from one port of the switch to your Cisco ATA and use another port of the switch to goto your router. Then what happens is your ATA is outside your router and it gets a 10 dot ip from your modem your computers on your network get their IPs from the router and you still the full protection of the firewall in your router because you did not have to open any ports. Which in my case did not work anyway nor did putting the ATA in the DMZ of my router. This setup works really slick and so does my Vonage. Everything works really cool and the quality of the sound is outstanding! Hope this helps

You may find your telco will charge you for the second IP address since most services provide a single computer access on the modem side. RoadRunner will allow you to do this but you'll get a mildly unfriendly call about having more than one computer connected - they will charge for the second IP. Just a word of caution Very Happy

Wow ... that's a DARNED good idea!

My ISP allows 3 "computers" so I'll be ok.

While it does allow hackers access to the ATA ... I don't see that as too much of a threat ... Question Anyone have a comment on this? Question

Other than the Vonage outages of the past couple of weeks, my ATA's been behaving well behind the router, but I'd prefer not forward any ports I don't have to. (although I only fwd 5060 and 5061)

Anything we can do to make my ATA more accessible to Vonage (w/o compromising our own LANs) is probably a good idea.

When I said to use the modems DHCP I meant use the LAN side not the WAN side. If your modem allows it you can enable DHCP on the LAN side the local area network which depending on the ip range set on the modem will assign an ip such as 10.0.0.4 this is not a WAN wide area network ip so you are still only using the one (external) ip assigned to your modem by the isp. I did call my isp and told them that I have computer hooked up and I wanted know if I could use the DHCP of the modem to address an ATA and also told them it was for Voip and they did not see any problem with it. Of course this all depends if the type of modem you have allows it. Also it needs to be a local ip not a wide area network ip which they would charge you for, for sure. This setup is working well for me and I don't see changing it unless my isp calls and says I can't, but for now they are fine with it.
