Last night I went down to CompUSA to pick up a Vonage starter kit. I managed to get it working without too much trouble, but, I can't make an outgoing call without the connection dropping within 30 seconds.

This isn't an intermittent problem. It's consistant. I've yet to maintain an outgoing call for more than 30 seconds. The odd problem is, inbound calls don't have this issue. I've tried both local and long distance numbers with the same problem.

My Network is as follows:

ISP: Comcast (Massachusetts)
Cable Modem: 3Com
Firewall/Router: SMC2804WBR
Vonage Adapter: Linksys PAP2

The 3Com Cable Modem is attached to the SMC Router Via Cat 5 Cable. The PAP2 is connected to the SMC router using the Cat5 Cable that came with the PAP2.

I have placed the PAP2 in the DMZ and have made sure all the UDP ports listed in the PAP2's manual are pointed to it.

Other devices on the network are:
-4 PC's Two with an SMC .11g PCI card, one with a Linksys .11g Wireless PCI card. One connected directly to the SMC Router via Cat5

-A Linksys Wireless (.11g) bridge/switch for use with my X-box

-A Netgear MP-101 Music player.

The SMC Firewall is set to on. uPnP is on.

just to eliminate a variable (or find it's the problem), have you tried plugging the pap2 directly into the cable modem?

Not yet. The only reason I didn't was that they PAP2 only has a single Ethernet port, so it doesn't allow for putting it before my router as a configuration. But, I will try that when I get home tonight.

One other bit of information I forgot to mention. There was a single call I was able to make that didn't drop. It was to the Voicemail Setup up number. I'm assuming that's an internal Vonage network number so it doesn't travel the same systems entirely that a normal call would use.

Ok, I was looking at those settings last night as well but didn't change them. I'll give it a shot what I get home.

I'm not confident, however. I have also tried turning off the firewall portion, but had the same problem.

First I'll try the "Maximum incomplete TCP/UDP sessions number from same host:" change the default of "10" to "40"

Then I'll try attaching the PAP2 to the Cable Modem directly.

If the latter works I'll see if I can set up a dumb hub to share the feed from the cable modem.... now where did I put that crossover cable...

Well now. I first tried to put the PAP2 directly on the Cable Modem. That didn't work. I think comcast is only letting one MAC address through. So, I tried the UDP settings you recommended.

That seems to have done the trick. I'll keep an eye on how things go and report back in a few days.

Thanks for the suggestions.
