PostPosted: Fri Jan 28, 2005 1:13 am    Post subject: Outgoing Caller ID - changeable? Reply with quote Back to top

I am a new Vonage customer (waiting on my box in the mail) and desire to have my name displayed on my primary line, and my wifes name displayed on our Virtual Number, which is in her home town area.

Is it possible to modify your outgoing Caller ID? How is this set-up?

I did read some discussions where outgoing Caller ID is "Vonage Holdings" or something like that, so maybe my question is moot point

thanks

Very Happy

WOOHOO! First.. congrats on saying MOOT point and not MUTE point!! Lol Now... you are correct, at this point in time Vonage does not support caller-id name change and it will say "Vonage-Holdings" if you call someone... Cry

hey thanks for the reply. Any projected time in the future where the customer name will be displayed on the Caller ID?

If so, can this be modifed for each virtual number?

(is this technically feasible I wonder also...)

I think you're confused on virtual numbers. they are not second lines. they're only another number people can call. when you call out from Vonage, it's always from your main line. virtual numbers are incoming only.

to update the "name database" Vonage would have to do it by hand. this would take forever and cost a lot. some places do it, like broadvoice or broadvox, but I think it's only for vtheir business customers. if Vonage ever offers it, I imagine there would be a cost associated with it.

To make name show up, they need to add a directory number record to the telco database with your name on it. Vonage is not currently doing this. This costs them money in terms of access fees and labor costs to actually populate it. Other providers are doing it. Broadvox Direct reportedly does it and I believe that AT&T is doing it as well. Some cellular providers do it too, but most of them do not

OK, very good info. Yes, I forgot (I actually did know) that Virtual Numbers are "inbound only"

thanks

If anyone from Vonage is listening, I expect a lot of customers (like me) would be willing to pay a one-time fee to set up an outgoing Caller ID. We would pay and you could could add in a little profit margin, so this would be a win-win solution for both Vonage and its customers.

Increase your revenues/profit and make your customers happier!

I agree, I would pay a one time fee to have my name updated in the database. While we did luck up, since we tranfered an old POTS number it still has my roommates name associated with it.

This would be a good feature to implement down the road.

Reebok,

My concern is that I want my name to show, because many folks will not answer their phone unless they know who's calling. Also, some services like Verizon's call intercept will not allow calls without names to go through directly. (I know that, because I have Verizon with call intercept on my landline.)

Do you think Vonage could provide this service at a one-time cost profitably? I expect a lot of customers would like to set their outgoing caller ID and be willing to pay a reaonable setup fee (perhaps $10).

Oh well, I like the Vonage service a lot. This is just a "wishlist" item.

Thanks for all your helpful posts on the forum. As a new subscriber, I've learned a lot reading your posts.

If Vonage has to enter each subscribers outgoing Caller ID information "by hand", it would make sense to put this as a customizable feature when we log into our web account. Then, everyone could update their own Caller ID information at any time, saving Vonage a lot of time and money.
