Hi, I'm a new Vonage customer. I like it so far except for one little problem. The volume coming through the handsets is now WAY too hot! When all the phones were hooked up to the normal phone system, the volume control when turned to low really quiet. Now that I've set up the Cisco to route through the phone lines inside, the low volume on the phones is almost overbearing. Is there any type of configuration in the Cisco box to control the signal level?

I'm seeing the same thing. I'm a new customer and have found the dial tone volume too loud to the point of static. Once I start a call, the reception is find, but the volume is still hot. I emailed customer support who told me that they have no control over the volume on the Cisco box. Cry

This isn't a major issue of course, but annoying nonetheless.

There may be an easier way around this. I think putting a resistor in your phone circuit somewhere in the house could provide enough voltage drop to decrease the volume. I don't have any idea of the type of resistor or the value but maybe someone else can recommend those. I don't have the volume problem because I have four phones and three DirecTV units connected which seems to drop the voltage enough or my unit could just be calibrated differently.

I have heard one report of putting a 270 Ohm resistor on each wire of the phone line coming out of the ATA. This was reported to work well to bring down the volume on the line. YMMV

Ok, I can confirm the resistor trick works. I ran out to Radio Shack and picked up a phone jack box (catalog 279-419) and a modular to spade line cord (catalog 279-391). They didn't have 270 Ohm resistors, so I picked up some 220 Ohm instead (catalog 271-1111).

I soldered the resistors inline for the center two wires (red and green) then shrink-tubed each connection _individually_. (Don't shrink them in the same tube..you could have a short!) I stuffed everything back into the box and plugged it in. It works perfectly bringing the volume down just enough. Now the dial-tone is clear and I'm happy. Lol

I think the Cisco boxes are being configured slightly on the high side. This works well since many people are opting to connect them directly into their house wiring, typically using multiple phones. In my case, I only have one base station phone and mutiple cordless throughout the house.

Don't let Vonage tell you that they can't control the volume level out of the ATA-186, the correct response from them may be "We won't adjust the volume level" as the volume level is adjustable on the unit.

I have a second ATA 186 sitting here that I use with FWD and the volume is pretty close to that of a POTS line from the local telco, (actually I think the volume is slightly lower)

Putting a resistor (or resistors) on the line to lower the volume level is a band-aid at best and a nusense, and you could damage something at worst. Although I'm not an electronis person, please emember the ATA needs to send out different voltages for communications (DC) and for ringing (AC).

The answer is to get on Vonages case to set the volume to a more reasonable level!

I also believe those people that have having sound quality issues with some phones may see the problem go away when the signal is no longer being over modulated and distorted. Remember these phones have a very small speaker in the handset and can only take so much signal without distortion.

So if they can change it, maybe you can tell me what the specific setting in the ATA is that needs to be changed in order to drop the volume? It might help to be able to pass that information along to them.

I know this much, my other ATA is set for the defaults for volume and I am using the same software version on both which is: ata18x-v2-16-1-030709a

the command that adjusts the dialtone volume from the web interface is simply dialtone, the default value with this version of software is:

2,31538,30831,1380,1740,1,0,0,1000 - I found on Cisco's web site how it breaks down but does include the volume of the dialtone. I'll have to look around more and see if I can find the output volume settings as well, or at least tinker with my FWD ata

How do you get to the web administration screens of the ATA? Do you need to be in a specific subnet as suggested by others for the box to allow you to connect?

You cannot access the administration of a Vonage ATA. They have it locked so that they can do remote administration.
