Hey guys,

So I read the Vonage Do It Yourself Home Wiring so that you can power all phone outlets in the house using the Vonage adapter.

Our NID looks a lot different from the big ones I see online with a label for the "Customer" side.

We just have a very small box that says "Telephone."

Inside there is a thick black (ground?) wire coming in. Then there are 4 screws holding down some wires. How do I go about disconnecting the phone company's side? I can't even tell which side they are.

Here are three pictures of this mess hehe:

Please help! I would like to do this myself, not because I can't pay 20 bucks to have a guy come out and do it, but for the sake of learning. Also, because it will be difficult to schedule a guy to come in unless they come on weekends =(

Thanks for the help!

UPDATE:

Ok so I tried what I found in another post with someone who had a similar box but with only two screws.

I removed the blue wires and that killed the phone lines so good. Then I connected the wire from the wall into the Vonage adapter port 1.

If I call I see the Vonage adapter light up but I cannot answer the call on any of the phones X_X

What did I do wrong here hehe? =(

The big black cable isn't a ground wire, it is a bundle of 4 individual wires. Each one of them goes to a different terminal.

You need to isolate them and disconnect each of the 4 wires that are in the black cable from the screw terminals - leave all the other wires attached - those other wires are your interior wiring.

the easiest way to do it is just to cut the black cable - but that's also the hardest to revert later Smile

You replied just on time! I was messing this thing up!

Ok so I've disconnected all the wires coming from the thick black wire (except the black wiring coming out of it because I assume that is the ground).

Now I noticed the thick beige wire has the same solid colors coming out of it. Should I keep those disconnected?

Thanks!

Your NID looks very much like our's. Did disconnecting the four incoming telco wires work?

Also, did you get any voltage zaps to your fingers when you did the work? Smile I'm curious because I'm about to do exactly this on our house's NID.

I went ahead and disconnected all four telco lines. Wrapped the ends in electrical tape, labeled them, and left all the house lines attached to their posts. So far, Vonage is working exactly as advertised!

I would expect the house is grounded through the post ground since its still physically attached.
