Yes, I saw it. But I still need to know if the prefix is outside our local calling area.

You are correct. 256 exchange is Ennis.

See the link below.

Excellent link. thanks. I'll use that as ammunition for Vonage to give me a different number.

I'm almost positive that's the problem. A buddy at work has Vonage and he only has to dial 10-digits from work to call home. For me, it's 11. Something's obviously not kosher.

Problem solved. They just had a database error that gave me an incorrect exchange for my city. I had them give me a new number that is truly local and I'm in 10-digit heaven now.

Thanks for everyone's replies.

so people who are in states that have the same area code everywhere, don't have to worry about the 10 digital number dialing? If I could pick up my regular phone and dial 7 digital, (no area code needed for in-state calls) and someone calling me would do the same on the regualr land-line phone, then Vonage should be the same, right? thanks!

You are correct. Here in NH it's all 1 big area code.

what?
if you port your number or get a new number that is local to you, people can dial you the same as always. the same goes for you. if it was 7 before, it's 7 now. if it was 10, still 10. etc etc.

You have to be careful which telephone number you select when you set up your Vonage service. If you called into the call center to set up your service the people there in New Jersey know nothing of our calling areas here. Not all 469 numbers are local calls, not everyone in 972 can call other 972 numbers locally either. I have an Irving metro number as my Vonage number, but have to call long distance from my office and other local numbers to get to my voicemail server (I do know that I can call my own number) but my point is that Vonage seems to think that all 469 numbers have the same local calling area. Here is an AWESOME website to determine local calling areas:
http://members.dandy.net/~czg/lca_index.html
scroll down to:
Search Area Code/Prefix/OCN
click on Area Code/Prefix/OCN and enter YOUR Area Code in the NPA box, then YOUR prefix in the NXX box and hit SUBMIT. This will tell you all kinds of telephone techie info and if you click on Rate Centre (the website owners are Canadian) this will produce your true local calling area. Yes, I know they are in Canada, but they really research the information provided, so it is pretty trustworthy.

You can also put in other NPA/NXX combinations to see if it is a long distance (toll) call to call your number. If so, you should have Vonage change your telephone number. Here's a secret, Vonage uses FOCAL COMMUNICATIONS landline numbers (this is the OCN), if you pull up a NPA/NXX combination such as 469-442, which is my Vonage area code and prefix, you can then click on the FOCAL COMMUNICATIONS name and it will produce all of their NPA/NXXs in Texas. You can limit the search by going back up to the NPA NXX OCN search boxes and enter 214/972/469/817 for the NPA and then tab over to the OCN field and enter FOCAL's OCN number which is 4938 and you will find all of their NXXs in the area code you entered. I'm sure when your in-laws get their phone bill they will know that your number is a long distance call. And that is NOT SBC at it again...and I am NOT an SBC or Vonage employee.
