For the past few weeks I have had the RT plugged into an output of the 54G, and everything worked great, except sometimes people told me they couldn't hear me well on the phone, and my voice sounded robotic at times. I decided to put the RT inline right after the cable modem to get rid of any QOS issues that might be causing the problem.
So this morning I did that. I enabled DHCP on the RT, disabled DHCP on the 54G. Called the 54G 192.168.1.1 and the RT 192.168.1.2. Told the RT to give out address starting at 192.168.1.100. I figured that I needed the 54G to just function as a switch, so I plugged 1 of the 3 RT outs into 1 of the 4 54G ports. That worked great for my computers hard-wired, but I had no wireless internet. I could login to both routers wireless, but not get out on the internet. I took the cable out of the Port 4 on the 54G and plugged it into the WAN port. Now I could get on the internet wireless, but my hardwired computers are out of luck. So I had to take 2 outputs of the RT, and plug 1 into PORT 1 on the 54G and 1 into the WAN port.
Not sure if that's the way it is supposed to work or not. |
Did you ever figure this out. I'm in the same boat (having 54G with wireless and hard-wired). I ended up putting 54G first but I don't want him first. |

ZRexRider,
This is what I have and its working good now. I upgraded the WRT54G firmware to the latest version so I have QoS controls on it now. The connection is still INTERNET -> WRT54G -> RT31P2. However, I have added the mac address of RT31P2 to WRT54G to be given high priority and use the middle option of Bandwithsaver mode.
My phone connections work fine most of the time with this setup. |

Leave your WRT up front. Put the Sveasoft firmware on it if you can. Assign your RT31P2 a static IP of 192.168.1.150 and turn off DHCP and any QOS you have defined. Also enable remote administration and take note of the port.
The WRT with the Sveasoft firmware has far superior QOS settings. Once you have done all this set the port you place your RT in to premium, set up premium for the mac address of the RT and set up a premium entry for the IP address of it.
My system is working much better like this. |

You guys go as far as telling how to set this up up to the RT, but what about after that? Im at the point in my setup where I can ping both routers, but anything after the RT, is dead in the water....
The RT will assign it an IP, but I can't ping it from the computers off the WRT54G.
Please help... going nuts Shawn |
