PostPosted: Sun May 16, 2010 9:49 pm    Post subject: Snow bird looking to set up Home Vontage in Mexico & Sea Reply with quote Back to top

I know this has been discussed before but it would be helpful to have specific information on how to accomplish making this request work.
I have 1 Vontage in my home with my own phone number in Seattle DSL Wi Fi Computer
I travel to Mexico where I have DSL Wi Fi Lap Top
Can I buy another Vontage system for Mexico and set it up like I did in Seattle. I heard that when you do this with your account info the second system comes up with a new IP address and you are prompted which IP you want to use. This effectively transfers your phone calls to the Mexico system.
When you get home you go backon the Vontage site and choose the other IP address and you are back to Seattle mode.
My goal is to not lug my system back and forth but I should not have to activate another account or do some weird call forwarding to a new number. I am not worried about 911 ability in Mexico.
Thanking you in advance for your help.

What you do is go on your online account and change the MAC address to the device that you are currently using. That way when the device is hooked to the internet, the signal can connect with it and will ring the phone through that device. The IP address is of no concern as you can take a device with you to ANY internet connection and once it is connected to the internet, it will make a connection to Vonage.

I have a similar question, only I'll be in Mexico for two weeks. I'd like to take my Vonage service with me. Is that possible and do I just take my modem and phone with me and hook it up the way I have it here?

I will have DSL set up at my home in Mexico, but don't want to have permanent phone service as it will be a rental and renters will need to get their own phone service.

Thanks!

why buy second lines? Why change computer set ups when traveling? Why confuse yourself? Use Skype, it is internet based and only costs about 40.00 per year. Long dist., caller id, vm etc. all included. All you have to do is login from any internet source wherever you are and make your calls. It will work in Seattle and it will work in Mexico~ all the same account. Simply login to your skype account and use your phone. The number assigned to you is internet based so not a local number for your area, However, this will save mucho cash and call quality is excellent.

only drawback to Skype is you have to use a computer headset w/mic. Many models are available but I choose a nice wireless set which gave me about 200 ft. of range away from the computer. Wired headsets are constricting.

The headset is exactly the reason I want to use my Vonage. I'm already paying for it and I can use a regular telephone. Calling anything other than another Skype user is an upgrade and costs additional $$.

Thank you Brother....As I research this I found the mac address in the tab menu of the Vontage site for my account, went under add ons and saw mac address ID. I think I get it now.

You don't need to buy another Vonage adapter. You can leave your adapter where it is. Just installl a call back switch (i.e., DialMate CM1003 at www.woodtel.com) at your existing adapter and when you are in Mexico, do a call back and call the Vonage World 60 countries for free. If you have a smart phone with Skype in it and you are in a hot spot anywhere in the world, do a call back from your smart phone and call the 60 countries for free without using Skype minutes.

I will begin by saying this. "If you have nothing constructive to say about how to make this work using Vonage products, go to a different forum. This is a Vonage support forum for Vonage customers about using Vonage products. If someone wanted to use Skype etc, they would be on the Skype forum. Enough spam"

The best solution to this has already been stated, a 2nd device and the Move Line function of the online account. This line and number would only be active on one device at a time resolving any problems.

Okay sports fans. I have it. I had to get the local guy over here and pay him a whopping 200 pesos (less than $20) to get this set up for me. So here's the skinny:
You need two phones, first. This didn't occur to me as Vonage is my only phone in the states. Here I have TelMex, which is what my DSL is connected to, ***so***...I just needed a second device.

Next, the phone you will be using for Vonage goes in the #1 jack in the Vonage modem. Cat 5 cable from Vonage modem goes to the TelMex modem in any one of the (4 in my case) LAN jacks.

Next, DSL from filter (the one coming out of the actual phone jack in the wall-yes, you need the filter) to TelMex modem and the phone from the filter to the TelMex phone.

Voila! Now you can pick up your Vonage phone and happily call all your loved ones (and in my case, customers) just like you would at home.

My only setup issue now is that I can't get my wireless headset to work, but think that may be because I didn't get a phone with two jacks in the back. I'll look for something else tomorrow in my travels around Ajijic.

Hope this helps someone in a similar situation. Hasta pronto!
