I recently upgraded my Comcast service that was supposed to give me 4mb uploads. No matter what the Comcast technician recommended, I could only achieve 1.4mb uploads. QOS was not turned on. My set up was Comcast modem-V-Portal- Router-Computer. I switched the V-Portal with the router and was able to get full upload speeds. I wasn't aware that the V-Portal could slow internet speeds. I have noticed no changes to phone quality. Download speed is around 16mb. I just thought I'd pass this along in case anyone else was having the same problem.

There is an additional setting inside the device that can only be accessed by Technical Support that scales bandwidth to prioritize bandwidth for Voice. In 99% of cases this works properly. In your case it is malfunctioning and you will need to contact Technical Support and ask them to "Disable Upstream and Downstream Bandwidth Scaling" and this will fix the issue. |

Scottsman,
Thank you so much for the reply. I've been using the new set up for over a month now (modem-router-vportal) and I've been very happy. I'm getting full internet speeds and phone quality has been perfect. I'm just going to leave it this way, so I don't need to call technical support. Very kind of you to respond though.

Your most welcome, for future reference though if you do experience choppy audio, dropped calls, one way audio, or any other digital audio symptoms these can be caused by routers being in front of a Vonage Device. Resolution for these problems requires the original configuration you had. In that case of course the solution i provided would fix the bandwidth as well. Of course the "Not broke dont fix it" philosophy does apply here and until such time you have those audio issues, leave it as it is |
