I wanted to thank everyone contributing to this forum as I was just about ready to ditch Vonage after 6 months of use and finally got my problem resolved. Vonage was decent for the first 5 months, but over the lat month, I started getting really choppy voice service. I could always hear the other person, but I would fade out completely, in some cases up to 30 seconds. It became particularly frustrating when I was presenting during a work teleconference and my voice cut out for ~30 seconds on multiple occasions. I talked to Vonage tech support several times and they couldn't really resolve the issue, but they thought it might be my voice router, so they replaced my Motorola VT1000 with a Linksys RT31P2. After getting the Linksys, the first day of phone calls was great, but the second day was back to the same horrible quality. I started researching this forum and found out my Toshiba PCX1100 cable modem might be the issue. I downloaded PingPlotter, did a 12-hour test and found I had a 2.3% packet loss, including 10 second losses several times per hour. I heard good good things about the Motorola SB5100, so I picked one up at Circuit City ($40 once I get the rebates). My ISP provisioned the new modem instantly and voice quality was drastically improved. I ran PingPlotter overnight and only have a 0.06% packet loss, an incredible improvement.
Thanks again to all those who previously posted and helped me resolve my problem.
Cheers,
Steven |

Thank you for this thread. I also have (did have!) the PCX1100, since it's beginning. For the last 8 weeks sporadically, and the last 2 weeks intensely, I was getting choppy and outright cutoff audio from me to caller. As a troubleshooter i was convinced my hardware was ok (hey, either it works or it does not work!) but after reading your post and others i decided to get the Motorola SB5100. Got it hooked up and WORKS LIKE A CHARM! I am so happy i could cry. If anyone has a Toshiba PCX1100 and is having any issues at all with any broadband related technology, GET RID OF IT! Don't waste your time on any other troubleshooting step until you replace that modem.
Thanks again for those who use this forum. Such a great help! |
