PostPosted: Tue Mar 23, 2010 10:00 am    Post subject: V-Portal DNS dead Reply with quote Back to top

I'm in the midst of trying to resolve this issue via tech support on the phone, but I thought I'd send it out here to see if anyone else has encountered this.

Suddenly this afternoon, I could not access the Internet on my home network. After tracking it down, it appears that something is wrong with the DNS requests going through my V-Portal. I can connect a laptop directly to my cable modem and resolve addresses without any problem. But if I reinsert the V-Portal into the chain, I cannot resolve addresses. Even more strange is that if I use a static DNS (OpenDNS for example) on my laptop, it works. It's as though the V-Portal is swallowing all requests to the DNS servers it has provided.

I have checked, and the DNS servers (from Earthlink/Brighthouse) that the V-Portal is receiving are the same ones being handed to the laptop. But I can't even ping those DNS servers from the laptop. I have rebooted the V-Portal and downgraded the firmware, but no change.

Tech support's initial solution was to tell me to use OpenDNS on my laptop (which also works), but this isn't a good solution when I have 5+ other devices in the house receiving DHCP/DNS via the V-Portal.

They also suggested I put the V-Portal behind my router, but again, I shouldn't need to do all this if the V-Portal worked.

Ideas?

Assuming that the V-Portal is connected to the cable modem and the WAN port address is dynamic (DHCP) and public (anything other than 192.168.x.x, 172.16.x.x-172.31.x.x or 10.x.x.x:
What Address is the WAN port of the telephone adapter (VDV21?)
When you connect the computer to the cable modem what IP address does the PC get?
Once answered we will go to the next step...

So after leaving the V-Portal disconnected and out of the network for 24 hours, I plugged it back in, and it worked fine.

This is my 2nd V-Portal, and I am convinced that this is an EXTREMELY buggy device. The first one killed itself during a firmware upgrade, and I have to occasionally reset this one because it loses its mind.

Just to further the discussion, the IP address given by Earthlink to the V-Portal matched the one it was giving to the PC...

In conclusion, I moved the V-Portal behind my Linksys router, and it works fine. I don't trust the V-Portal as a router, therefore I'd rather stick it someplace where it doesn't kill my whole network when it goes out.

I received a followup call from Vonage tech support last night informing me that this is a rare but known firmware issue. Again, I'm of the opinion that despite Vonage having a great product, its usability is killed by having a crummy interface (the V-Portal).

Thanks for posting this. I also followed the same protocol as you did and it worked well for me afterwards.
