Just what it says, ANYOBDY can access my router configuration login. I've had a friend who lives about 3 km away from my house and another friend who lives in Malassya (all the way arround the world) both access my router configuration login page. All they did was type in my WAN IP into their browser. How do I disable this?
Is it just me or does everyone see the MAJOR security problems with this? I mean, everyone has access to your router, which mean anyone can dissable your phone, computer, and your whole network.
setup cable->modem->router->pc + xbox + wirelesss
router is Motorola vt-2442-vp |

You don't indicate what sort of remote access to your Vonage device is enabled. While I am not familiar with your Motorola vt-2442-vp, I use a Motorola VT-2142-VD. Perhaps they are similar.
On the 2142, remote access to the router is disabled by default. You can log into it (normally, only from the LAN side) on 192.168.15.1 to enable or disable remote access. The default username and password are both 'router'. You could change the username and password to make it harder for unknown parties to log in. If you log in, choose the ADVANCED tab from the menu, and look at the Remote Access choices. These affect access from the WAN side of the router, and are best left disabled. If yours are enabled, you might want to change them.
Also, take a look at the administerable options in your cable modem. Every cable modem I have ever seen contains a router. By default, the router in the modem performs no port-forwarding, and so would block access from its WAN side to anything like your Vonage device on its LAN side.
Here in NJ, the cable company blocks access to port 80 on a customer's network unless you pay extra for the right to operate a web server. Vonage gets around this limitation by periodically sending registration requests and keeping a NAT hole open, but this does not permit outsiders to log in to their devices. |

thank you for the reply (first reply to me in this forum EVER) I have personally found an option in the router configurattion called Remote Web Access. If this option is not enabled, then apparently by default all ports connect to the router itself. If enabled, then the configured port (default 8080) is the only one to connect to the router.
Apparently you can't turn off this option, but 1 port is better than all ports. |
