I have been using v-portal with Uverse for over a year, never had a problem, voice quality had been truly superb. But since January 2010, I have been getting a lot of disruption, the Vonage box sometimes cannot find the Internet connection ,meanwhile I am still online! And the outbound voice is just simply not audible. I have done some test as advised by Vonage tech support, rather high latency level from Uverse Internet causes all the above problems. But when I called AT&T, they had no idea what latency is, all they could do is to reboot my RG. That fixed the problem for several hours, then all went back to hell again. Is there any more options I can do? Right now, my Vonage service is good for almost nothing, I have to forward all Vonage calls to my mobile phone, and use Skype or mobile to call out.

What does Uverse have to do to correct the jitters?

the 2wire or actiontec routers that are supplied for the U-verse service have a firewall that may have tagged the Voip for inspection or even blocking. You'll need to lower the firewall settings to low or configure the telephone adapter as a DMZ or forward ports to it. The ports used are UDP 10000-20000.
We can assist with instructions if you let us know which router you have for the U-verse service.

The RG is a 2Wire 3800HGV-B.

During day time, I usually get rather low percentage on Quality of Service.

Here is also the latest Voip test report

Since you notice a time of day where the issue occurs:
Make sure your wireless access is secure with a password
If limewire or other (P2P) peer-to-peer sharing is in use turn it off or set bandwidth limits in the applications prefs
Is there some electronic device on during this period that is off otherwise?

Here are the steps to configure the Firewall for your Vonage service
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/2wire/3800HGV-B/default.htm
You'll need to add a "new user -defined application for the Telephone adapter.

Application Name RTP
Protocol UDP
Port or Range 10000-20000
Protocol Time Out Leave blank
Map to Host Port Leave blank
Application Type None Default
Click Add Definition

Go back to Firewall settings
Select Computer (you'll need the IP address of the V-portal - Press the select button, use down button to system select network, select internet note the ip address 192.168.1.?)
Add the RTP to the Hosted Applications for the Telephone Adapter.
Click Done.

Let us know the outcome...

Also if you use pingtest.net you'll get a letter grade (A,B,C,D,F) and an explanation

Thank you for the detailed help.

I don't have any of those p2p stuff. One thing important though, sorry that I failed to mention one hook up - I use power-line Ethernet adapters to connect V-portal to Uverse RG. Yesterday I moved the V-portal and the adapter to a different room, no service interruption since. When I ran voipreview.org tests, service quality is always at the lowest percentage in the afternoon, some jitters. But that should be ISP's problem, isn't it? We don't have any devices that's only on during day time, not even TV. The wireless is private and secure.

If the power-line Ethernet adapters are the reason for the frequent "not able to connect to Internet" error message, then I am really puzzled, because it had been setup this way for over a year and I never experienced anything wrong. And we did not add or move any electronic devices at all. Could it be from neighbors? But we are in a free standing residential house.

Anyway, I will try your suggestion with the firewall setting, and report back any improvements over the next 3 days. Pingtest is cool!

Are you running the sppeedtest.net and pingtest.net from your computer while it is attached directly to your router ?
Also on the V-portal menu a diagnostic tool is available, Press select, move down to system, press select, move down to diagnostics, teat connection, quality....

If the Ethernet power thing is over the copper wire in your walls and not UTP Cat5, 5e or 6 then I would expect a a less-than-best Ethernet connection.

The online diagnostics in the vportal no longer work like they are suppose to. When doing test 2 and test 3, all vportals are displaying network error now. Just wanted to let you know this.
