I just bought Voip and I'm currently evaluating it .
If it works out, I hope to get rid of my land line.

Staple has the Voip box for $79.95 and there a $65.00 rebate which make the box cost $14.95

I see that the rebate is only for new users. If anyone else I know signs up with Vonage, I will make sure to tell them that they don't have to wait for delivery of their ATA. Thanks!

the product at Staples and Radio SHack is the PAP2, not the router, so if you dont' already have arouter you can't use the PAP2, as it does not have a LAN 'out' port on it..

That's odd that they are selling that model. This means your voice calls would not get priority over your data communication, thus introducing another problem to the quality of service.

I had issues with Telus, like a lot of people do with Bell, but I am happy to see that they are finally starting to listen to their customers.

I plan on staying with Vonage simply because everything they offer for $19.99 is a bargain and the call quality is excellent. Being a new company I expect a few hick-ups now and then, as with any company no matter how long they've been in business.

It's how they treat the people that keep their business alive that matters to me.

I read customer reviews about Vonage that almost scared me away, but I also read a lot more positive reviews and decided to take the plunge.

I purchased an adapter at Staples less than a week ago and aside from some service glitches with the DSL, I've made two lengthy long distance calls (45 min); the conversation was clear and stable from start to finish. I love new technology when it works; it was cool to see my call posted on my account within minutes of it ending and the balance updated of minutes remaining.

Thanks Vonage!

Me too. I read some reviews that were not good which scared me away. The only reason I decided to go with Vonage was due to their money back guarantee before 30 days or so many hours of talk time. If it weren't for the money back guarantee I would not have bothered. After only having Vonage for 1 week, I called Bell and asked them to disconnect my line. The funny thing was that they did not even bother to ask why I was leaving them. That proved to me that they really don't give a damn.

The promise of Voip, one piece of the concept of all communication / information services coming into the home on one system, and maybe even by one provider. (Television / Internet / Phone etc.) The concept still has a ways to go but it is getting there.

I have had Voip for over 4 years, originally with another company, the technology was in it's infancy then, it was computer software and a computer card with the phone hooked into the computer card. The sound quality was not that good, and there was a lot of echo on some international calls. I think that the Voip protocol has been changed since then and the voice enhancing and noise suppressing technology has been improved. Back then it was more or less a call out only system, and the incoming calls could be handled if the caller had a similar system as you.

That system would work fine if everyone had this same technology, but the POTS system is so prevalent that it was necessary to make the Voip system work with the POTS system and all the issues that this backward compatibility requirement entails. But this is just a transitionary phase, otherwise it would have been easier to bypass the POTS system and leapfrog to a clearly better and more advanced technology. Your unique identification number lies as much or more with the system that you hook up in the home as it does with the service provider. With the POTS system the phone company has control of this, and this is the cause of a lot of the problems with having to blend both systems, to work with POTS phone numbers. Once the POTS system is completely gone, like LP records when CDs took over, there will be a lot less problems with this technology.

I have just changed over to Vonage a couple of weeks ago, the voice is very clear compared to before, it is probably even clearer than the POTS phone system. There have been a few wrinkles here and there, and there will probably be a few more as with any growing technology. I have a local Voip Area Code but not a local Exchange Number, so local incoming calls are long distance to the local callers. The only way around this is to get a local Exchange Number, and the easiest way to do this is probably transfer my current POTS number. I'm not sure if this is doable in my area yet, but until it is I will have to maintain a POTS telephone service. My original intent with going to Vonage was to replace my current POTS system entirely. This will be an eventuality but right now I don't know when that it will be possible.

Switched over from the evil-doers at Telus, and won't ever switch back. Vonage has more features and almost have the cost. Call clarity and customer service is superior also. Was even able to use existing internal wiring in my house just like with Telus (email me if you'd like to know how, it's very easy and fast to do).
