PostPosted: Mon Jan 24, 2005 5:11 pm    Post subject: Taking Vonage adapter on vacation question Reply with quote Back to top

Hello. If I was to take the Vonage adapter on vacation, would the place where I was become my local calling area? Would all my regular phone calls be routed to the vacation destination, and if so would all calls made from my home (orginal) calling area (made by people calling me thinking I was home) get charged long distance? How does it work? Also would Voicemail take over for my answering machine on vacation if all calls are routed to me?
Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!! Very Happy

Thanks, but it doesn't clearly say that people from my home calling area will or will not get charged long distance?

Wherever you take your Vonage box, it will always "work-think" like it is at its home base.

If you, say have a NY number, and take your box to say, Texas; the calls would be charged and seen as if you were still in NY.

If someone is long distance to NY, then they would be long distance to your number, even if they were next door to you in TX.

Hope this makes sense.

ok, let me explain something about Voice over IP (VoIP). There are many providers of this service, of which Vonage is one. One of the great things about Voip is that you can be anywhere and have a phone number from somewhere else. here's a quote from vonage.com that explains this better:
"With Vonage, you are no longer tied to your "local area code". You can select any area code you want from our list of available area codes. This means even if you live in New York, you can have a California area code."

this number is local to californians, not new yorkers even though that's where you live. so, if I called a local number, I called a local number. that's all there is to it. it's the same as call forwarding on pots. if you set up call forwarding to a european number, then does the person who called your local number get charged international rates? no. I guess you don't have a cell phone so I won't go that route like the first link I posted did, but the concept is the same. I'm not sure how this can be explained any different, but judging from the questions you are asking, you would be well served to search out some reviews on Voip in general and learn about the service before you get it.

and here's your short, to the point, spoon fed answer: they will not be charged long distance. as long as the call is local to them, it makes no difference where you are.

whoops, a little late. I guess that's what happens when you get on a soap box.

OK, so if I take my adapter to Japan my wife can call our Vonage number from her cell or I could call her cell and there would be no difference right??

My buddy said that he read that it was 3.9 cents a minute outside the country. My response was that it sure would take a lot of work for Vonage to track the routing for 4 cents a minute.

Comments??

what don't you understand. an area code is an area code is an area code. if you call a japan number then you're calling an international (non US) number. Vonage charges by the number you call, just like every other phone company in the world. does your Vonage line have an international, non-US number? if so, then you're already paying these charges when your wife calls from her cell.
the only issue I would bring up in an internatinal case would be this:

Easy killer.

I was talking about my Minnesota based home phone on Vonage. Taking that to Japan and hook it up there when on business. Then, she calls our Vonage number with her Minnesota based Sprint PCS phone. Or the other way around.

The question was really based on the 3.9 cents a minute because the adapter would be in Japan. Is there any truth to that??
