I recently installed Vonage service at home in the USA. I have a Vonage Router, and I know I can take it with me overseas to use it as a local calling number. I also have a Linksys RTP 300,that I want to leave behinh for my folks to call me in the USA. I would like to know how to setup the RTP 300 router for them to call me in the states.
Thanks in advance for yur assistance. Smile

Apparently this is a very difficult question, since has been seen by 40 viewers, but nobody has an answer to it. I would think, that maybe the folks at Vonage would know, since they have been using that RTP 300 router for a long time ,but do not want to divulge their secrets, perhaps?
Somebody outhere has to know, how to do this setup!

The reason your not getting an answer is because you did not include any information. I don't even think anyone understands what your asking.

We know you take a device overseas and leave another back in the US for your family. So the question is, what exactly are you unsure of?

Do you have 2 Vonage accounts? Do you have 2 different Vonage phone numbers(one on the device overseas and one on device back in the US)

If you have one device overseas with one phone number and you leave a device in the US with another phone number, each device gets plugged into the internet and you dial any phone number just as you would from any phone.

If you only have 1 Vonage phone number but have 2 Vonage devices, then you cannot setup that same phone number on both devices if that is what you were trying to do.

Thank you for your response.
We have one account in the USA,we are going to travel to South America in a couple of weeks. I understand, with Vonage you could have two USA numbers, therefore we would keep one number for use in the USA,and leave the other number overseas for our family to call us with the other number as a local call to us.
I assume,that this setup is possible,and legal.
What,I would like to know is how to setup phisicaly( Channel,IP...etc) the RTP 300 router that I am going to leave behind, since it is a different router, not the brown color router issued by Vonage.
If you need more information.please let me know.
Thanks again for your assistance! Cool

To use Vonage, the device must come from Vonage device inventory and has to be on a Vonage account. It cannot be something you just picked up from the internet and is not officially from Vonage. So with that said, the RTP300 you have will need to be added to your existing Vonage account or have it added to a new account. The provisoning of the device is done by Vonage, not by the end user.

So once you have this RTP300 on a Vonage account and the account has a phone number assigned to that RTP300, once the RTP300 is then connected to a broadband internet connection, it will download it's configuration(phone number and such).

As for using Vonage outside of the US, it is use at your own risk. It could be illegal in some countries and Vonage is not responsible for any legal problems you may have if you choose to use it outside the US. In addition, you are at the mercy of the internet where you are and cannot expect Vonage to be responsible for any technical issues you may experience.

O.K. I think we are getting closer to the answer I was looking for.
By the way thanks for your assistance with this request.
You are saying that the second router,in this case the RTP 300 has to come from Vonage? I understand that you could by any router for Vonage usage, anywhere,Best Buy....Comp USA ,etc, and then register(configure) it with VONAGE.You do not have to buy it from Vonage, is this correct?
Once you have your router, could be any brand, such us D-LINK,Linksys,etc,you have to contact Vonage and they will set it up in our account.
Again, since this router has two phone line connectors,as most Voip routers have,my question again is. Can I have,I think this is the case, two numbers on my account, and leave one behind in South America to call a local USA number?
Thanks again for your help!

Yes you can buy a Vonage branded router from a store such a Best Buy as long as it is Vonage branded. It has to say Vonage on the box and have the Vonage documentation in it.

Once you have this, you can add it to your existing account. You can add a 2nd phone number to your account and put this phone number on the RTP300.

Since Vonage is not a local phone company, the phone numbers are provisioned into the Vonage router. Phone numbers are not tied to a physical location or address. This mean you can take the router with you anywhere in the world and use it the same as if it were in the US. Vonage to Vonage phone calls are always free and any call you make to a non Vonage phone will be rated and charged based upon the rate plan you have. So it does not matter if you place calls from outside the US back to the US. To Vonage it does not matter where you are.

As I told you before, Vonage is not responsible for the service not working outside the US or for the quality problems that may be experienced. Vonage is also not responsible for informing you on whether or not it is legal or illegal to use Voip in the country you plan on using it in. You need to research that yourself. If it happens to be illegal and you get caught, it is use at your own risk with no liability to Vonage.

Hi:

A couple of more basic points than setting up the router.

If you have Vonage & your family doesn't, just look up their local Vonage Access number - they dial it on their normal phone, get a brief ad & then dial your Vonage # and its a free call you them.

When you travel, you take your Vonage box with you & they keep calling the V-Access # then you Vonage # ... if you don't have your Vonage box connected they get your voicemail, if you do then your phone rings.

We do this all of the time (in fact got the 1st Vonage line/box for a trip to Paris in 2006), but we now have 2 Vonage lines for our home office & multiple Vonage boxes, using the 'move a number' feature to switch between the Vonage box in the wiring closet (thats permanently connected to our home phone wiring) and a combination of 1 extra Vonage box - 2 V-Phones - 2 Vonage/UTStarcom WIFi handsets where we take the most convenient one with us on that trip.

The only quirks we've encountered were a few locations without 'free' internet access (but in the past few years that has become rare) ... 2 years ago we did a hike in rural Wales & few of the B&B's had internet so we tracked down the UK V-Access #'s for the various towns & used them to call our Vonage # at home ... last year we did a hike in rural France & most of the B&B's had internet access so we took out little Netbook PC & a V-Phone, which worked flawlessly.

Hope that helps.

Z

It's basically the same set up at home. As long as you have a live ethernet jack to plug it in, it will work fine for you. Disregarding firewall of course.
