PostPosted: Mon Jan 24, 2005 1:05 am    Post subject: RT31P2 behind Direcway DW6000 - must reboot to get dial tone Reply with quote Back to top

I've been hearing reports that Direcway VSAT and Vonage can work well together, even with the DW consumer package that I currently have. It has in fact been working rather well from here....I live in a remote area with no power lines, phone lines, or cell service, and have been placing and receiving calls with this system with excellent results....except...

I have my Linksys RT31P2 from Vonage configured and working just fine....but it can't bring the phone connection up on its own. When I go into router setup via 192.168.15.1 and save settings (even if I don't change anything), upon reboot of the router I get a dial tone. I place a call, hang up, and then can only get a dial tone again by rebooting the router via its setup IP address. Same if the internet connectino is lost for a few moments, requires a reboot of the router every time.

Any ideas of what the problem is?
The IP of the DW6000 is not static, though I could upgrade to this.
Thanks in advance
DAN

Dan - First I would like to say that you have come to the right place for an answer. I saw you struggling in Dslreports/Broadbandreports.

I have a couple of comments/questions:

I use DirectWay in my home in PR. It has been 2 years since I tried Vonage with it, but my experience was a long delay, due to latency in the Satellites. I likened it to ham radio, with "over" and "roger out" required in every sentence.

Has the DirectWay product changed? This would be the first report that I have read that it does work with Vonage.

Oh, I am so sorry, Where do you live?

Some folks (a couple are on dslreports.com) report that Vonage+DW works quite well (assuming you don't mind the latency delay) with the DW SOHO package and enhanced uploads, and that it works OK but it is very spotty with the basic consumer package.

My current phone service is cell that works only half the time, and before that it was radiophone autopatch in simplex only....so the calls I've been making over the DW6000 with Vonage have been exceptional compared to that! Autopatch was a serious hassle. A matter of perspective, I guess ;~) I'm located in the N Colorado mountains about 20 miles west of Fort Collins.

Any help appreciated!

Got it!
Connected the router as a switch thru only the LAN ports, leaving WAN open. Set static IP at far end of the DW6000's IP block, turned off all DHCP. Set gateway and DNS to the DW6000's.
AND -- it's critical to power up the DW6000 and get a satellite cnx before powering up the RT.

I'm having the exact same problem. Can you explain your solution to a non-techie?

PostPosted: Thu Mar 10, 2005 12:07 pm    Post subject: direcway config Reply with quote Back to top

Cancel all my previous info! I added a computer, and had to reconfigure my network. Now I have it working in a totally different config.

I'm not real good with networks either, hhardin....here's what I did THIS time. Vonage is working GREAT now thru direcway!

Don't use the Linksys config software that came with the RT31P2. It is the cause of the problems I had, I think. And, Vonage (and a forum reader who emailed me) said that when the RT unit is behind the DW6000, the RT can't retrieve firmware updates. Go to the router's config page (192.168.15.1) and be sure your fiirmware under 'router' is version 1.27.01, Jan 17 2005 or newer. Vonage will send you the new firmware if yours is old.

What I did---

I set up the new network with a simple LAN hub. The DW6000 and all my computers plug into this. Get this up and running fiirst, with all your computers able to access the internet.

Power on the RT unit, and press and hold the factory default reset button. Plug in the RT unit into the hub, to the 'internet' connection on the RT. You should see the 'phone' light start to blink. When it's solid you should have a dial tone.

I shoulda been suspicious from the start about the Linksys config software. The manual says "Linksys products operate only under the Windoze operating system. Windoze is the most reliable and popular OS in the world, and........" Bah humbug.
Smile

Feel free to contact me if you have any problems. I'm not an expert, but I can at least read network settings, and tell you exactly what I'm plugging into what.

For me it was all firmware problems, and the update fixed it. I just set up a direcway-vonage system for my boss next door, and never had to configure the router at all, didn't even have to access it's setup page....it's a new one they sent him, smaller than the RT31P2 I have. Plugged the Vonage router into the direcway box, the computers into the Vonage box, and it worked. At my house, the LAN hub is plugged into the direcway box and the Vonage box into the LAN hub. I'd try resetting the Vonage box to factory defaults by the button on the back, and hooking it up with no config.

Are you sure it was a busy signel and not a 'no connection' fast busy signal? I had this happen -- the dial tone was OK, but all calls got a fast busy signal. Resetting the Vonage box to factory defaults and hooking up again did the trick. The windows config program from Linksys was what messed it up.
