PostPosted: Thu Dec 24, 2009 2:38 pm    Post subject: Linksys RT31P2 behind DGL-4500 - no phone service Reply with quote Back to top

Purchased a DGL-4500 router to try and make my online gaming experience better. To maximize that I'm wanting to have it connected to my cable modem instead of my Vonage router (RT31P2). I don't plan on having any other equipment connected to the Vonage router except the phone but if I plug my desktop in it does get a dhcp address from the DGL4500 (192.168.0.x) and I can browse the net. I've read a couple different articles about port forwarding but can't seem to get it setup correct. Currently I have the following setup:

DGL 4500
192.168.0.1 - 255.255.255.0

Linksys RT31P2
192.168.15.1 - 255.255.255.0

Both have DHCP enabled.

Thanks for any help.

First confirm that the Linksys RT31P2 Internet / WAN port is connected to one of the Ethernet ports on the DGL-4500. From the way you made it sound, if you plug a PC into the Linksys RT31P2 right now, the PC gets an address of 192.168.0.x. This means that you have an Ethernet cable going from a port DGL-4500 to an Ethernet port on the RT31P2 which makes the RT31P2 act as a switch. The RT31P2 needs to have to have a physical connection on the Internet / WAN port in order to communicate on a network.

So once you confirm the RT31P2 Internet / WAN port is connected to the DGL-4500 and still does not work, connect a PC to the RT31P2, log into it and confirm that the Internet / WAN port is getting an IP address from the DGL-4500 (192.168.0.x) If it has no IP, then start with trying to resolve this problem. If it does have the proper IP information, log into the DGL-4500. Go to Advanced then Firewall. At the bottom of the page is the Application Layer Gateway. Uncheck the box next to SIP and save settings. Reboot the RT31P2. If that still doesn't do the trick, go back to Advanced and Firewall in the DGL-4500 and disable the SPI Firewall at the top of the page for testing purposes and save settings. Reboot RT31P2.

That was it!! Didn't even consider the linksys needing to be connected using the Internet/WAN port instead of just one of the Ethernet ports. Connected to the dlink using it, rebooted the linksys and I now have phone service. Thanks for your quick response!

Follow up: While the phone registers and I have dial tone, making and receiving calls is flaky at best. Is there anything else that needs to be done to allow proper phone function?

Go to Advanced then Firewall. At the bottom of the page is the Application Layer Gateway. Uncheck the box next to SIP and save settings. Reboot the RT31P2. I had mentioned this in the first post because the SIP ALG causes issues with Vonage. If that doesn't correct the issue you need to follow the next step of disabling the SPI firewall completely.
