I just spoke to Vonage customer care. Shocked to hear the total charges they impose on disconnection. If you are taking a new connection please be aware that the instrument Vonage provide does not come free. When you disconnect the line, you will be charged $100 + $39.99. $100 part is never told to customers even if you ask the customer support. This is like cheating the pople having good faith in Vonage. Almost all my friends are shocked to hear this. Most of them shifted from TWC to Vonage and now they need to pay $100 upon disconnection which nobody were aware of. |

Those are listed in the Terms of Service. When you sign up for Vonage, you state that you have read the Terms of Service. If you did not read them, it is your own fault. It is fully spelled out in the Terms of Service at "6.5 (a)" - Fees upon disconnection. Terms of Service |

This may be spelled out in the Terms of Service, but Customer Service should be up front on it when asked. Anything less may be legally correct, but is hardly the way that a respectable company should behave. |

When you sign up for wireless service, they do not advise you up front of ETF. When you sign up for DirectTV or Dish, they do not advise you of ETF. IF you ask, they will tell you, but most people DON'T ask. So when Vonage doesn't tell you EVERYTHING in the Terms of Service without you asking up front, they are wrong. |

The OP indicated that Customer Service doesn't tell you even when asked. I don't know if that's correct, but if it is, then it isn't a fair business practice. |

So as a Vonage customer you're required to pay a disconnect fee no matter how long you've been a customer?
I can understand if I have a 12 year agreement and I cancel early but if I don't have any such agreement I should be able to cancel without any fee. |

It is not a disconnect fee, it is an early termination fee. If you do not complete the terms of your contract, you must pay an early termination fee (not a disconnect fee). |

legally there supposed to. did some digging and found that this was a reason for the attorney generals offices looking into that.
theres a number of places to get your issue heard, dig around i found some on ihatevonage.com and a few other sources about these fees. theres a section in there TOS about arbitration, you can go that route. arbitration@vonage.com. |

From their website:
What is a disconnection fee? Vonage charges a disconnection fee per voice line of $39.99 if you cancel your service within 1 year from the date of your order.
If your subscription date is on or after May 29, 2009, and your service is disconnected after 1 year following your subscription date, the disconnection fee is waived.
If your subscription date is on or between February 1, 2007 and before May 29, 2009, and your service is disconnected after 2 years following your subscription date, the disconnection fee is waived. |
