I purchased a used Vonage PAP2 adapter on eBay after our RTP300 crapped out after a power outage. I was assured from Vonage tech support that this would work since it was a Vonage branded adapter. I have switched our account from the previous adapter and MAC number to the new PAP2 one.

When I plug in the phone cord and ethernet cord from my Motorola Surfboard cable modem and power up the PAP2 the blue power light and ethernet lights just flash. I have left it plugged in for a couple of hours hoping that if it was updating firmware, etc. it would finish and I'd be able to resume phone service. No such luck, the lights just keep on blinking and the phone light does not light up, nor has it at any point.

Interestingly, it must connect in some fashion because our phone shows that there are messages awaiting at Vonage. Prior to connecting this new adapter the message light on our phone was not on. When I checked the IP address it gives 0.0.0.0. I have tried rebooting all components, as suggested in the manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This is a basic network issue not a Vonage issue with the PAP2 itself. 0.0.0.0 means your net getting an IP address from whatever is acting as the DHCP server. You state that you connected the PAP2 directly to your cable modem which would mean your ISP is issuing the IP address. If you are connected like this, how are you getting internet to your computer?

Can you give a better description of how you connect the PAP2 and how you get internet on your PC?

At this point I'm switching the ethernet cable back and forth. I didn't realize that the PAP2 was not similar to the Linksys RTP300 that has a router function. If the adapter works, I'll pick up a basic router to have both, without having to swap the cable.

Some ISP's will not just issue an IP address to a new MAC address without powering the cable modem down for at least 5 minutes. By removing the power to the cable modem for 5 minutes will cause the ISP to clean out cached information they keep about the modem's MAC address and whatever network interface it is connected to. So first try to power down the cable modem and the PAP2 for no less then 5 minutes. Then power up the modem and when it shows its online, power up the PAP2. Let it stay connected for about 5 minutes before attempting to check on it. At that point see if the phone LED is lit. If not check to see if it did obtain an IP address.

The other thing could be it is a defective device. That is exactly why many posters including myself warn people about purchasing used telephone adapters on ebay.

My own experience with the Motorola surfboard cable modems is that when you unplug a LAN-side device from the modem's ethernet jack and plug in a different device, you must power the modem off for a minute or so and power it up again before it will recognize the new device. Apparently, it only renews its ARP cache on power-up. It probably doesn't vend a DHCP address either.
