Hi Everyone,

Since I moved and got a new phone number, my Vonage number shows up as "Unknown" when I call other people. Is there some way to fix this?

Thanks Smile

This is the way it is supposed to display. Vonage numbers are not provisioned with name on outbound caller ID. Therefore when you place a call to someone, their phone service provider will perform a CNAM query into their database and if the number they look up does not return a name record, they will fill the name field with a variable such as Unknown, Unavailable, Out of Area, or the City / State of the originating number.

The only way you could have had your name display with Vonage is if you port a number to Vonage. The previous provider that owned the number had populated your name in known CNAM databases. Due to that, other providers still would have a name record for that number.

Let me further say this is not always the case... I ported my number in and it says Unknown to everyone except Comcast Digital Voice subscribers.

One thing that may work for you is a website called listyourself.net. They claim they have a database of CNAM information that you can put your info in for free. I don't know for sure whether it works or not, but they claim it works with Vonage.

I find that surprising - According to http://www.vonage.com/support.php?sc=support0409&article=1361 the answer provided is:

How does Caller ID with Name work for outgoing calls?

For outbound calls, only your phone number will display.

Once again. Vonage lists only your number will display, meaning Vonage does not pass name in the SS7 signaling nor do they populate anyone's CNAM database with your name for your number. Therefore from a Vonage perspective, only your number is being passed.

However, how the caller ID is displayed is not up to Vonage or any provider placing the phone call. It is up to the receiving provider who uses a name passed in SS7 which Vonage does not do so therefore no name. The other method is the receiving provider to dip into a CNAM database, look up the calling number, and pull the name for the number. Once again, Vonage does not populate any CNAM database therefore the receiving carrier will not find a name. The receiving carrier has many options when no name is found. They can just populate the name with the phone number so on a 2 line CID display, you see the number on both lines. They could populate the name with Unknown, Unavailable, Out of Area, or City / State of calling number. These are just a few of the variables that may display.

So what is posted on Vonage is correct since they are stating that they only guarantee your number will display at the far end.
