Hi, anybody can throw a light?
Can I connect Vonage Box to a router directly and use the Vonage service? Say for example if I am staying in a Hotel, I will not access to Modem, instead I may get access to Boradband. Can I use my Vonage? Your help is very much appreciated. Thank you. |

The answer depends upon the hotel. Their guest Internet service usually requires a guest login before access is granted. So, connect the WAN port of your ATA (Vonage box) to their broadband jack, and connect your PC to the LAN port of your ATA. Open a web browser on your PC. You'll probably get a guest login screen. Once you have logged in, your ATA will have access to the net.
The ATA will then attempt to use this network access to contact the Vonage server. If the Hotel wants to force you to use their house phone system and pay their rates for doing so, they may block access to the Vonage servers. They may block access to well-known SIP ports. There's probably no way to know without trying it.
If your ATA can access the Vonage servers, and if SIP and RTP services are not being blocked by the Hotel's router, the next question is do they supply enough bandwidth to support Voip? You need about 90 kB/s up and down, with minimal delay and jitter, and minimal packet-loss, or your calls will suffer impaired audio. These may vary over time, depending upon how many other hotel guests are using broadband at the same time. Here, too, there's probably no way to know without trying it. |
