My house is wired with an On-Q 1x6 telecom module. I have a Vonage line, with two handsets, that is connected to my wireless router. I just bought a new V-Tech cordless phone to add to the family room. However, when I plugged the telephone cord to the phone jack in that room, I didn't get a dial tone. I checked other phone jacks in the rest of the house and noticed the same thing. I then moved Vonage adapter and handset to the other rooms and noted no dial tone.

I opened the On-Q box and noted that only the "LINE IN" has blue and white wires connected. The remaining 6 cat-5 wires are not connected to any of the 6 lines on the On-Q system -- they're all hanging loose. Could this be the reason for the phone jacks not working? Other than my office room, where the wireless router, Vonage adapter, and base handset are located, none of the phone jacks are working. I also have HomeGuard security system in my house. I recall that I had a HomeGuard guy come-in about 4 months ago because my alarm system was not communicating with my Vonage phone. He could have removed the 6 cat-5 wires from the On-Q system. When I had first gotten Vonage I had checked phone jacks in every room and they all worked!

Can someone help identify the problem? I think it's the 6 loose cat-5 wires in the On-Q system; I'm pretty amatuerish in these things so could be wrong. Thanks in advance for your help!

I think you're probably right- it has something to do with those loose wires. A single blue/blue-white pair only supports one line. Unfortunately, if you're not handy with this sort of thing, you're likely to need some on-site help from someone familiar with house wiring, alarm systems, and the On-Q module.

One of the complications is that an alarm system is normally designed to preempt the phone line during an alarm call. To do this, the telephone line is wired to the alarm box instead of the phone jacks. The alarm box then passes it on to the phone jacks during normal operation, but cuts it off when it's handling an alarm.

Thanks Steve48. I figured it out. It was the loose wires -- after hours of "trial & error" I got it to work!
