Hello Vonage-Forumi-ians!

I have been working off of the same ATA, a Motorola vt1005v since day one (some time in early 2004). I've weathered a few storms with this device (including quite a bit of learning about QOS and network performance... thank you, Tomato Firmware).

Even with my current setup (Comcast <-> Linksys WRT54G running Tomato 1.25 <-> vt1005v) and a fairly conservative QOS setup, I still run in to quality of service issues with my line occasionally. This is an issue as I do rely on this line for business and spend quite a bit of time on conference calls while heavily using my data connection through two laptops.

So... question to the experts: have you seen a substantial benefit of moving to a newer ATA (i.e. the Vonage v-portal), either having it as the first device in the network (cable<>v-portal<>Linksys) or behind my router (cable<>linksys<>v-portal)?

Is there anything I am not adding in to my calculations which might sway me one way or the other? (other than the obvious point: it mainly works now, why screw with it Wink )

I'm also interested in the answer to this. Obviously, having a Vonage device first in line allows it to give top priority to the Vonage service, and that can help on call quality. What often isn't understood is that that can't help what happens at the other end. If you're doing heavy data transfers and the server at the other end fills the pipe with data that blocks the transfer of Vonage packets, then QoS settings at your end can't do much about that.

I'm curious. There are a lot of views, but it seems like no one has made a willing move from one device to another. I suppose in one way that answers my question with: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Still, I would be curious to understand some of the performance differences between the two devices. Strictly around call handling and even routing capabilities. The other features on the new v-portal (caller ID, bandwidth check) I think I understand pretty well.

Any suggestions on where I might post this to broaden the search? I've crossposted the same questions on vonage-forum.com and dslreports.com.

I imagine that it's going to be pretty hard to find information elsewhere on comparing the V-portal to other adapters in terms of router performance. It's pretty much a Vonage only issue.

I think I am in a very similar situation. I have been using a Motorola VT1005 adapter from day one. Vonage sent me a refurbushed replacement for an early failure and it has been working ever since.

My installation is: ISP --> DSL modem --> Vonage ATA --> Switch --> everything else.

My issue is with the limited router function configuration that is available in the VT1005. I have some devices on my LAN where I was assigning static IP addresses, and [apparently] the VT1005 DHCP server will not handle a mix of static and dynamic IPs. Since I couldn't set a start and end range for the DHCP server, I started getting IP conflicts.

Technical support was very considerate and tried to be very helpful. Their solution was to send me a V-Portal ATA to replace the VT1005 so I could set the start and end ranges in its DHCP server and avoid any IP conflicts.

I received the new device and swapped it out last week. I am NOT impressed. Previously my phone audio quality and internet access was great but, all of a sudden, everything went to the pits. My call quality was TERRIBLE; choppy and broken, and my internet slowed to a crawl with numerous drops and loss of connection. Since my internet speed tests were great, I don't understand why.

I have spent hours with technical support this week. They have tried lots of fixes (or whatever they do) from their end, but all to no avail. The service would work great while I was talking to technical support but, within a few hours after we finished, I had the same problems.

In my opinion the problem was that the V-Portal was the problem, but I couldn't convince anyone.

Last night I had enough, so I swapped out the V-Portal for a Motorola VT2142 that I picked up at WalMart. I can set the start and end ranges in its DHCP server to avoid IP conflicts (the original issue), and everything seems to be working GREAT. So far, no more choppy or broken voice calls, and my internet connection is back to its speedy self with NO dropped connections or IP conflicts with other devices on my LAN.

I will make sure everything keeps working over the weekend, then give them a call in case they want their V-Portal device back. IMO the V-Portal was my problem and it certainly doesn't live up to expectations. (I say that to be polite because I think it's a LOUSY device.) For me, the Motorola VT1005 is a GREAT device and its single-port router will work well for simple LANs. So far (less than 24 hours), the Motorola VT2142 is working great, too. I think it will work well for my [slightly more complicated] simple LAN.
