I have had this set up for maybe 10 years and never had a problem. Now (a few days ago) people are reporting they can't understand me because I am breaking up. Have rebooted the adapter, router, cable modem and tried calling on other phones but still the same.
I am still using the old Linksys PAP2 adapter and I think it may have failed. I want to use the Vonage Dect 6.0 cordless phone system & V-Portal. Will that work seamlessly, just plug it in and go? Is the V-portal part of the phone system? If not what is it for?
Thanks |

Before changing things, you may want to run a Voip test. I understand that the forum test isn't working, so you may want to run this one: http://www.whichvoip.com/voip/speed_test/ppspeed.html . It's possible that your internet service or router is having an issue.
Assuming the test indicates everything else is all right, replacing the PAP2 makes sense. The V-portal does the same job as the PAP2, providing you with up to two phone lines. The difference is that the V-portal is also a one port router. You could plug it directly in to your modem and plug a computer into its output ethernet port and get both phone service and internet service for one computer without an additional router.
I assume that you're using a router with the PAP2. If you want to continue to do that, things should work fine if you just plug the V-portal in where the PAP2 was. Alternately, you could plug the V-portal into the modem and plug the regular router into the V-portal. The biggest thing to watch out for is to make sure that if both the router and V-portal are acting as DHCP servers, they should be set to use a different LAN address set.
The V-portal can be used with any telephone, not just the DECT 6 phone that comes bundled with a V-portal as the Vonage DECT 6 phone system. |

Thanks Steve, just the information I was looking for. The router is fairly new and the cable modem brand new, not to mention I see no issues with my net connection on the computers. I'll give the test a try and see what it comes up with.
Regards

I think you can attach screen shots, but I don't know how.
As for Comcast, I doubt that they would support an issue that you reported as a problem with Vonage. If the problem is also affecting cable television or internet service in a demonstrable way, try to get them to fix that. |

Routers and modems have a 2 yr give or take life span depending on the activity. There's always something you can do to get a connection but if your setup is old it may be time for a replacement. They run hot, don't rule that one out. |

Another common problem maybe your internet connection a faulty cable on your isp's end would bog you down. Consider an upgrade or if it's DSL it should be dry loop. Half the time those guys don't hook it in. Also consider your wiring because Vonage will put a small strain on your connection. If you have a lot of television (boxes) hooked in and 35 ft of wire in your home. Try to reduce it and make sure your spillting everything correctly and using the right filter. 9/10 times its either and old modem or router, long wiring, too many connections, or a faulty connection on your isp's end. |

I work for a fortune 100 company and the individual that setups cable internet for employees has received 10+ reports of individuals with comcast experiencing audio-drop/cut outs. I have comcast and (knock on wood) not experienced this. Just food for thought... |

We have all known that where traffic shaping can benefit the provider, in a bad economy I would tend to think this would be a no brainer of sorts. (provided they can get away with it) |
