Post subject: Installing V-portal to Wireless Router
My DSL modem and wireless router are on the second floor(cant be moved). I want to install my phone and fax machine(vonage dedicated fax line) on the first floor and work off my laptop. Is it possible to get the v-portal adapter working via the wireless router?
I already tried running a search, but was unsucessful

I would not suggest trying to send the signal from the wireless router to the
Vonage
adapter wirelessly through a wireless bridge as some may suggest. There are too many variables that come into play that could affect your connection leaving you with spotty phone service.
The best way to do this would be to fish an Ethernet cable down from the wireless router on the second floor down to the
Vonage
adapter on the first floor.
Another way to do this would be with the use of powerline Ethernet adpaters. You plug one into a power outlet near the wireless router and connect an Ethernet cable from the wireless router to it. Then you plug the other powerline adapter into a wall outlet near the
Vonage
adapter and connect it via Ethernet cable.
I personally use the below myself for PS3 since I sometimes get too much interference via wireless where I live.

Thanks for the reply. Have you tried
Vonage
with the XAVB101 at all? I want to make sure that it works well with both the voice and data(fax) before I buy since the equipment is not cheap.

Have not tried it with
Vonage
. Only use it for the PS3 as I said. What you need to understand is the traffic that would be passed from the wireless router to the
Vonage
device via these powerline adapters are just IP data packets. It's not voice or fax tones. IP packets are not analog. So in theory, IP data is IP data. And it wont be worse then trying to transmit via wireless between floors.

I just thought of something...Doesnt the modem have to connect to the the
Vonage
adapter first, then the wireless router connects to the
Vonage
adapter? So what would I hook up the xavb101 to? I cant move the modem from upstairs.

The
Vonage
adapter DOES NOT have to connect to the modem directly. This not a requirement for
Vonage
to work. It is only a suggested method in order for the
Vonage
adapter's QOS to function which in some cases could provide for better audio quality in the event your bandwidth is being sucked up by other applications running on your computer or other bandwidth hogs such as online gaming on Xbox or PS3.
