I have a wired connection that is working very well, and I'm trying to set up wireless connectivity by adding a Netgear router. I connected the Netgear to the Linksys via lan port, but only the port light is lit on the Netgear. I can't access the Netgear by browser login, it keeps timing out. I can't access the Linksys by browser login because I don't have the username and password.
I just want to have a wireless network for the house while continuing to use Vonage.
All suggestions are welcome, I appreciate the help. |

If your saying you connected one of the LAN ports of the RT31P2 to a LAN port on the Netgear, you wont be able to access it. Your computer is getting an IP address of 192.168.15.x through the RT31P2's DHCP server. The Netgear operates on 192.168.0.1 so this is a separate network and would not be accessible from a PC that has an IP of 192.168.15.x
Even if you connected the Netgear's WAN port to a LAN port on the RT31P2, it would still not be accessible this way. To access the Netgear via 192.168.0.1, you would need to have a computer plugged into one of it's LAN ports. Then you can configure it the way you want and also enable it's Remote Admin page. This would allow you to access it via it's WAN IP of 192.168.15.x from a computer connected to the RT31P2. |

Ok, so you are saying that I can plug a laptop into a lan port on the netgear, configure it, and then I'll be able to connect netgear lan into linksys lan and use as a WAP? |

And if this setup is too cumbersome, what is the best way to set up wireless home network and still use Vonage? |

Yes you can just use the Netgear as a WAP by going from Linksys LAN to Netgear LAN. All you need to do is set up the Netgear LAN IP to be on the same subnet as the Linksys.
IP: 192.168.15.x Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default GW: 192.168.15.1 DNS1: Your ISP DNS servers, Open DNS servers such as 4.2.2.1 DNS2: Your ISP DNS servers, Open DNS servers such as 4.2.2.2
DNS not really important here since you will still be communicating with the RT31P2 for DHCP. Having the correct IP, Subnet, and GW will allow the wireless portion of the router to communicate on the same LAN as the RT31P2. This will allow traffic between a wirelesss client and the RT31P2.
The other method is to connect the Netgear's WAN port to the Linksys LAN port. The Netgear would then get all it's information from the RT31P2 automatically. All you would need to do is set up the wireless portion by connecting a computer to the Netgear for a 1 time wireless setup. |
