Post subject: Disrupt Vonage.?
I recently started using
Vonage
internet phone service. I am pretty much happy and satisfy with the overall performance and voice quality. I have been noticing for a past few days, its going in and out. Well, I have been downloading a lot in these days. Wondering does downloading from internet can disrupt my
vonage
?
Thanks

Yes it will. Any data that is being passed from your LAN to the Internet and vice versa will have to co-exist with the voice packets. This is where QOS comes in. It allows you to prioritize which packets have real time communications between your LAN and the Internet while other packets with a lower priority are queued up a few millseconds before transmitting. This allows for the voice packets to stream in real time when bandwidth is being consumed.
If your setup is Modem ->
Vonage
device, QOS is already being performed since it is done by default by the
Vonage
device. If your setup is Modem -> Router ->
Vonage
device, you would need to set up QOS in your router or reconfigure to Modem ->
Vonage
device -> Router.
Depending upon your total overall bandwidth that is available at the time of the call, QOS may help. If your bandwidth is lower then normal such as peak usage hours on an ISP with an over subscribed node, QOS may not help you.
