Hello all... I just unpacked my V-portal this evening and have run across a configuration issue I can't explain... I have set up my V-portal as instructed - Cable Modem --> V-portal --> Router - but when I do that, the V-portal cannot connect. However, if I put the V-portal behind the Router, all works well - except I can't get to the configuration UI. So what's the deal? And are there any disadvantages to the later of the connections? |

Did you power your cable modem off for a minimum of 5 minutes before connecting the V-Portal?
If not try this. Most ISP's will retain the MAC address of the previous device that was issued and IP address and will not issue an IP to another MAC address until the cable modem has been disconnected from their head end for about 5 minutes. If you cable modem has a built in battery back up, you need to pull the battery as well or remove the coaxial cable.
Some ISP's also require you to register the MAC address of devices that connect to the modem. Yours may do this. So if the above does not work, you may need to inquire about MAC registration with your ISP.
The advantage to having the V-Portal directly to the cable modem is to use it's QOS so that the voice packet have priority over data which helps provide better quality audio when you are doing things on your computer in relation to the internet. With the V-Portal behind your router, you wont have this priority and depending upon the amount of total available bandwidth you have at that time from your ISP and what you are doing on your PC may determine the quality of your conversation. Some routers have the ability to configure QOS and some do not but if yours does, it is not automatic and would need to be set up. |

Thanks for the info! I'll try what you suggest and see if that works. I know I did a power-down for roughly 30 sec, but not 5 minutes. I'll try that today!
Thanks! |
