Hi,
I'm able to make calls, but when I receive a call the person who called can hear me but I can't hear them. Tried Vonage technical support but no luck. Thought maybe someone here has an idea. Following is the data from the sticky:

1. Your location: Mexico City, Mexico
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc) : Cablevision (unrelated to Cablevision in the US)
3. Upload and download speeds .75/1.5
4. Modem make and model : Motorola SB900
5. Type of Vonage adapter used: PAP2
6. Setup of Network: Modem----> PAP2 over ETH

I was unable to run the speedtest (some sort of Java issue). A little more information: In order to get it to work as is, I turned off the firewall on the SBG900, assigned a static lease to the PAP2, port forwarded 5060, 5061, 10000 - 20000 to the PAP2. Have tried NAT passthrough and DMZ for the PAP2 but that makes nothing work (no dialtone, no phone lights on the PAP2). Thanks.

After you disabled the Firewall in the SBG-900, did you power cycle it? This is a common issue and what most people do not know is that the actual feature change on the firewall does not take place until after the firewall setting is changed and SBG-900 is then power cycled. Just disabling it in the web interface does not turn it off. All of the port forwarding and DMZ will not help. The SBG-900 is notorious for not implementing NAT properly.

What happens is that on outbound phone calls, Vonage waits to send packets to your IP until they receive packets from you when your telephone adapter is behind a NAT. This does not happen on Inbound calls. The packets can be sent instantly. When the packets hits the router / firewall, it blocks the IP sending the packets to you. Under normal conditions a real NAT firewall will allow these packets in once the client starts sending packets out. But in the SBG-900's case, it was not built correctly and bans the IP sending you packets for the entire session. Some other routers that also have poorly implemented NAT solutions not only block the packets from the IP that sent them to you but even block the packets going out.

A true router will only block inbound packets from an unknown source IP until an internal client starts sending traffic to it. The SBG-900 is a not a good piece of hardware.

There is absolutely nothing Vonage support can do. If you disable the firewall, reboot the SBG-900 and it still does not work, get yourself a real standalone modem. Combo modem routers are terrible to begin with.

I did power cycle the SBG900 to no avail. Your explanation makes perfect sense. Do have a couple of follow-up questions if you dont mind.

1) My ISP offers a wired version of the SBG, model number SB5100. Do you think NAT is implemented differently or is it the same modem (with the same issues) without the wireless components?

2) On the SBGs Gateway Status page, there is a section called "translated addresses". In that listing, the addresses and ports for the Linksys have a different "Mapping Protocol" as everything else (#3 instead of #4). Does that mean anything?

The SB-5100 would not perform NAT as it is not a router. It is just a standalone modem and would be recommended. However, since you have a PAP2 telephone adapter, you would need to purchase your own router to place between the PAP2 and the SB-5100 in order to connect computers and the PAP2 at the same time.

This would make sense since the protocol used by Vonage is UDP and just about anything else you would be doing on your computer is TCP. So without knowing what #3 and #4 actually represent in the SBG900, I would just guess they are UDP and TCP.
