I want to send a vontage box to a woman in the Philippines....she has dsl and will use the vontage over the dsl but instead of pluging a phone into the vontage box I want her to plug her 56k computer dialup modem into the vontage box or other voip box and dial into a USA 56k dialup access number. I know this may seem strange to want to do this but I have very good reasons.
What service can i do this with? will vontage work? do i need to change codecs? |

56k dialup service will NOT work with Vonage. For any VoIP service (including Vonage) to work, you'll need a broadband connection using either a cable modem or dsl. |

It is highly unlikely that you will have much success with this. Faxes have a hard enough time transmitting, I can't much see a modem handshaking and then staying connecting while you try and transmit data. |

I make about 180 modem calls per day through Vonage to PSTN (and some Vonage) lines using 1200 bps modems. I put up with modem handshake failures or data integrity errors on about 10% of the calls. My system re-tries and usually achieves success on the second or third attempt. The trade-off (reduced expense for slower over-all performance due to the re-tries) is worth it for me, but may not be acceptable to all.
I also receive a dozen or so 1200bps modem calls per day though Vonage from these same PSTN lines. On these inbound calls, the error rate is far lower, but still noticable.
In general, Vonage, like most VoIP carriers, is better used for voice than for data. Passing modem signals through typical VoIP codecs is not recommended. Fax, on the other hand, is very reliable, but is probably not passed through the Vonage network as a fax modem carrier signal. It is probably being translated by the ATA into T.38 or something similar, and passed through the Internet in purely digital packetized form. |
